I test drove an 2001 TL just to see if i can find an big difference between the 5 vs 4 speed tranny, i didnt think it would be a difference, but man i was wrong! The 2001 shifted firmer, much more quiet at highway speeds, also rpms were lower on the highway, throttle response is better, and it even seemed to hit 60 mph quicker than the 4 speed. It has 178k miles vs my 117k. Dealer wants 3k for it, man i wanna do it but the 4 speed is more reliable, am i tweaking or is the tranny differences that noticeable? Btw, my car is in good codition, just that damn evap leak.

 

those tl trans go out all the time, most ppl get them and do the av6 trans swap, I don't know the difference in the tl-s trans over the av6 trans as far as what it feels like but keep that in mind before the purchase, depending on previous ownership/miles will determine the trans remaining life lol

 

yep, which is the reason why i chose my 99 over a 2000 and newer in the first place, btw thats a great build u completed! U motivated me to get my TL in shape!

 

Just get the Type S with a bad transmission for dirt cheap and swap an AV6 and marvel on how that car can hit 0 to 60 in 6 seconds for that low money.

 

^ this. It's come to the point now that if you just keep checking your local CL ads you can find a nice 02/03 type-S with a bad trans for cheap and then do the AV6 swap.

 

Nah i think ima just stick with my 1999, do some mods and call it a day👍. But i really liked the way the 5 speed rode compared to the 4 speed.
