Does the 2nd Gen. TL share its tranny with the 2000 RL?
Sorry for the cross post, but I thought you knowledgeable 2nd Gen. guys would know this one.
My dad is about to buy a 2000 RL and I wanted to know if the achiles heel of the 2nd Gen. TL (ie the transmission) is also shared with the 2000 RL.
Anybody know?

I don't think they are the same. I have a 99 RL and I've put 121k miles since new and don't have any transmission problems. The RL has been using the same transmission since 96.
The extended powertrain warranty to 8 years only applies to 2000+ TLs with the 5-sp auto so I'm guessing its not a problem with the 4-sp autos.
The 5-sp auto in the 2000+ shifts very differently than the 99 TL 4-sp autos. My brother in law had the 99 TL 4-sp auto and shifts were instantaneous. My dad has a 00 TL 5-sp auto and shifts are slightly delayed. As far as I know, he hasn't had any transmission problems yet at 21k miles. (knock on wood)

RL and 99TL do not share the same Trans.
