Talking Do it Yourself LED project

Okay, there a few people here (or was it two?) who did it...I emailed one of them asking how (the Hondu, hondal or whatever his nick was) and he never show me. But I found out how from searching.. it is quite simple to do. Below is the link. Notice, the instruction is not mine!!!

I don't do it for anyone else...as a matter of fact, it's a do it yourself project. I just found the info and like to share with those who wish to have a little project on the side to play with.

I just did something similar in my TL... Ya know how BMW has ambient lighting via 2 amber LED's in the reading light module? I just did that to the Acura, just in Super Blue. Looks SO awesome... Rigged it to the vanity lights in the driver side sun flap. Drilled 2 holes in the homelink module, and they shine down and light up the car real nice. I also swapped the red "security" LED to Super Blue. More coming soon

69tl - Pix coming soon... I gotta rip the assembly back out of the car and honestly ive been too lazy to do it

rysky007 - no, i didnt want to replace the reading lights, as i use them, instead i drilled 2 holes through the plastic and ported 2 5mm super blue LED's through them, and rigged them to the parking lights so when driving at night, there is a blue cast over the center console, like the amber cast in the bimmers... looks good, might make it a little brighter. i will get pix up soon...

I swapped my A/C panel, clock panel and the LCD panel on the instrumental cluster (that displays milage etc) with super blue leds....IT"S BEAUTIFUL.. man a lot of work but all worht it. Costed me about $35 or so in parts...and countless hours of labor. I'm very satisfied for now. I tried to take some pics but my damn cheap camera doesn't take good pics in the dark (which is best to see the blue leds) and in daytime, the damn camera doesn't pic up the blue too well either..soryr guys.

rysky - If you get the chance, look at a 5 series BMW. Next to the reading lights theres 2 holes, up inside ther are 2 leds. thats how the amber color makes the inside of the car glow... I did the same thing, no reflections at all, as you cant see the emmitting devices because there embedded, you cant see the LED's, just the mystery blue light coming from nowhere on the dash... Cost me about $10 and about 2 hours...

Well if you take the odometer (instrumental cluster) out, there bunch of halogen bulbs on the back (very little ones) that lights up the odometer, gauges and all. I replace them with super blue leds that's how they lights up blue...brilliant blue. I did the same for the clock and the a/c panel. Now everything lights up sky blue instead of yellowish white of stock. I was a little exaggerated on the time. It takes a little to modify the LED into the stock halogen socket (plastic socket). After the first one, subsequent ones should takes about 3 mins max. The reason the first one takes a little longer is because i was sitting there trying to figure out how to do it. Also, I took it in and out several times, swapping out the bulbs etc to find the perfect match (color wise)..that's why it takes so long. If I were to do it again, probably will take me about 2 hrs max since I know exact what to do, what type of LED etc.

I read the damn manual for the digital camera and finally figured out how to take pics in the dark. I took some pics of the installed blue LEDs on the TL's LCD panels. Anyhow here wants to help me post them? THe pics does not look as good as in real life..but at least it'll give an idea of what it'll be like.

Yes, you will need to solder and stuffs...the only way. The link i posted on the top is the best instruction you'll find. If you don't feel comfortable with soldering, you can always pay someone to solder the LED in the socket for you, then all you have to do is put it in.

I wanna do it but its so time consuming. The site shows the small flat resistors. Where would I be able to get those I kno Radio Shack dont carry those. Also how do you test a LED bulb? Do you connect it to a battery or what?

I have to admit that looks tight, but al ot of work, can u buy the LED;s that have build in resistors or do u need to keep them seperate??

To test a LED, you need a DMM, DVM or the so-called Volt Meter. Make sure your testing equipment is capable of testing a diode. Select diode testing, connect the 2 probes to the legs of the LED. If the LED doesn't light up, switch the probes. If the LED still doesn't light up then either the LED or your testing equipment is messed up

It should not take too long if you have experience with removing the dash.

BTW, dont trust randomwalk101 when he uses words like "pain in the a**" or "countless hours" since a 2-3hrs headers installation job is considered both of the above
John, stop discouraging people from do the work themselves

How much can I pay you to do this for me?

How much can I expect to pay to have someone do this for me?

Okay, let me give you a run down. Material wise, this is how much it will be:

LED : 6 x $4.00 (approx) = $24.00
resistors/solder/wires/heat shrink: $5 (approx)

So basically you're looking at roughly $30 in parts. So I think with labor, it'll be around $20 or so...cuz it'll take around 2 hrs....

Urgh, do not misunderstand me. This is basically a DIY (do it yourself) project. Someone asked me what is the cost, I gave him an approximation of how much it would costs (parts) and a reasonable labor price (if someone was to be hired). As for me, I rather go to work, make 40/hr rather than two hours for $20
But anyhow, it's basically making the modification to the bulb's socket. Basically, it comes down to take out the stock bulb/socket and put the modified one in. Taking the dash apart is simple..takes about 2 mins to pull the things apart. Instructions to take them apart is in the FAQ.

You can buy resistor at any electrical store....or just go to radio shack (a little more expensive, but it's everywhere). Just get the regular oval shape resistor (what I bought) with value of 470 ohms @ 1/4 watts. You can get that waffle/flat kind which is a plus but it'll be a few cents more expensive and not really necessary since the regular one will just stick up more .... but doesn't really matter since it'll be sitting at the back and you will never see it or touch it once installed.

OK if I want to test which resistor you use with which LED. Do I still use a DMM, DVM or the so-called Volt Meter and connect a resistor to one end of the led? Thanks
