Do tranny's "learn" your driving style

(I lost this post in the migrate...so, let's try again)
Bought my 2002 TL-S 3 weeks ago, took it in for 30k service, complained about the sluggish, sloppy shifting, and asked about the transmission. They said it had been replaced in December (so now I already have had at least 2 in it.) The service tech said I should give it 5-7,000 miles for the tranny "to learn my driving style and adapt." Really??? Will our transmission be so clever? If so, does it affect the manual shift as well?
