DIY pulling CEL code? Which obd2 pins?

Hey guys,

I had the CEL codes DIY printed out but i can't find it anywhere...

Does anyone remember which 2 pins i have to jump on the obd2 connector to get the CEL to flash so I can get the code(s) ???

My car is throwing a CEL + TCS.. i need to figure out what's wrong.

its a 99- his trans is fine -

What was the car doing when it threw the light
What was the last thing you worked on right before it happened?
Is it still giving a CEL all the time

Do you own a scanner that plugs in to the port behind the panel? in front of the shifter
If not
Drive across the border- our parts stores will hook up the scanner in the parking lot and give you the readout for free

There was DIY on the CL forum about this.. I actually found it, but the pictures are not showing anymore.

fsttyms1: I'm surprised you don't remember, as a long-time member, the DIY method that was posted a few years ago.

01tl4tl: FYI, my tranny has been replaced last summer.

This time, i'm pretty sure the tranny is not the problem, even though with the CEL+TCS, it's shifting much firmer/faster and not always shifting on its own when not in SS mode.

It seems like a sensor problem, like the car doesnt know how fast it's going.

Everything was perfectly fine when I parked the car.. Then I started it up 2 hours later and got the problem.

So guys, there is in fact a way to pull the code by inserting a paperclip in 2 of the obd2 port's terminal/hole, i just can't remember which ones and can't find anything on the web.

I've done it several times in the past...

Where are all the old, original Acura-TL.com posters, they would know!

notice his location- thats in Canada,,,
for the public school grads~

The question is: if you already have seen a CEL, its stored the code even if the light is not on today
Use the scanner to plug in and download

okay, to let you know, none of the auto parts stores i know of (kragen, autozone, napa) do code pulling anymore. unfortunately, i needed one last week, and they dont offer it anymore. Apparently, autozone got into a lawsuit and lost over some guy who came in to borrow the code reader, pulled the codes, came back into the store, got suggestions from the codes through the diagnostic system. fixed his car with said suggestions, fu*ked his car up and sued the company and won. because of assholes like that who dont take account for their own careless actions, none of us are able to use the code reader for free anymore.

what is jumping it going to do?- how is it giving you a code that way? thru the radio display?
What is the car doing- maybe we can diagnose without codes

Many places in the USA still do free code reading, CA is less now with smog laws and those shops wanting to make the diagnosis fee of $150... instead of you figuring out the car at home,
but its still around
They may not LOAN it out for you to try and self diagnose-thats possible, meaning an employee will plug it in and give the readout to you- run it thru their computer for suggestions
and they give a disclaimer of Codes are CLUES not complete Diagnosis
Example- on another car I had a full rich condition with water temp sensor failure indicated-
Was actually the TB bad and stuck in cold start position- nothing wrong with the temp sensor at all- and the TB not even listed as a suspect!!
I happened to know what that combo meant from setting up FI systems decades ago

Found it!

OK so FYI guys, you need to jump pins 8 and 13 on the obd2 connector.

Here is a link to the original thread about this method:

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-cl-frequently-asked-questions-52/reading-check-engine-codes-no-dealer-autozone-required-453077/

The problem is the pictures don't work anymore, so we can't see the codes list with what they mean..

I got 7 short CEL flashes, which means it's code 7. On a '99 integra, code 7 is unplugged/defective throttle position sensor.

I also got TCS codes #36 and 31, but apparently, these codes wouldve been thrown because of the CEL...

So now guys you know you can DIY, you don't even need to drive anywhere! If only I could find that stupid code list now...

I was not 100% sure, but I thought '99 honda/acura codes would be the same. Turns out I was right.

I installed ALLDATA on my computer and code 7 is indeed a TP sensor problem.

Now, im not sure if the TP sensor can cause these symptoms:

- hard shifting between gears (it shifts really fast, not smoothly)
- if not in SS mode, transmission does not upshift, it only downshifts.
- in SS mode, i can up/downshift as usual.

I'm pretty sure it's not an internal transmission problem.. It has to be a sensor/solenoid thing...

Anyone?

If the computer cant figure out where the TB plate is, it may not be able to gonkulate if its ok to shift, or what rpm is happening,,a guess based on past reading of threads

My 01 CLs did something similar. Here is the thread on it:

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-cl-2001-2003-50/transmission-issue-wont-shift-out-third-sporadically-696080/

TPS was the problem.

Good luck.

on a related note,, my maitenance required light is flashing when I start the car!?! WTF!

Its only been 7500 miles since I changed the oil- what do you think is wrong?

Is it time for new carbshaft bushings or camfibrillator flushing.. I heard it means new center muffler bearings--and those area reallly pricey!

Has anyone else experienced this problem??

noob!

As for the topic at hand, I think I remember reading something in the service manual on how to pull codes without a scanner. It doesn't give you OBD codes, I don't think (like PXXXX). I start looking for my books & forgot that I had sold them, lol.

I paid about 170.00 for my Actron and it has paid for it's self repeatedly. I highly recommend a scanner for anyone planning on doing any mods on a late model car.

I got away with the cel flashing deal on my OBD1 cars but not having to deal with that is great.

Justin. Those symptoms can be caused by a TPS sensor, and a member not that far back had similar symptoms and that was the problem.

I believe I am the member you are referring to.

I posted the link to my thread, in post 22.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=696080

Even after you resolve the issue you need to clear the CEL, another way my reader has been valuable.

Yes. But using the paperclip methods does not give you the PXXXX codes. It gives you a number (you count the CEL flashes) and this number equals a P code.

BTW, I have the list if anyone wants it. (Gotta love ALLDATA)

Why pay 170$ when you can do it for free.

unplugging the battery for 5-10 mins will do the same thing, again, for free.

Now guys, i checked the TPS signal on my VAFC2... it wasnt working at all. Looked under the hood, SURPRISE! The connection had came loose.

Problem fixed!

Firstly there are codes that don't store, I had to drive around in recording mode to get the TPS code.

The light went on but then went away when the car was restarted.

Then there is the possibility of fubaring the car from putting paperclips into the connector, or the connector.

Finally the battery deal is not 100% it may or may not clear the cel & then you have to reset all your radio presets & in my case two NAV settings.

If your time has no value to you by all means do it this way, for me, I have limited time and having to reset my Kenwood Stereo/NAV (a complex deal that takes 30 minutes now that I have it down to a science) is reason enough to be unwilling except if 100% necessary to do.

So you are saying you created this thread and lived with the issue for three days without opening the hood?
