Converting my TL to a TL-S

So how hard and what exactly is involved in converting a TL to a TLS? I know off the bat that they have different intake mainfolds and trannys but there has to be some re-wiring along the way also.

Talked to some local dealerships about what parts would be needed and basically got brushed off--"too difficult, too involved, too expensive" were all key phrases.

rewiring? you are forgetting the VSA that requires some MAJOR surgery by the wheels.

your better off just buying a used Type S engine then going through the whole hassle of converting it...

Right. Any suggestions on where to find one? I've been looking on eBay forever with no luck...

By the way, haven't forgotten about the headlights, Mr. . Just got some CT headers; that kinda put a dent in my bank acct.

Try looking for rebuildable Type S.. Take the parts that you need and resell the parts that you dont....

OK, whenever your ready to get them cleared let me know...

The ebay prices are too high. There up there with like dealer prices..

Check autotrader, cars.com, and your local papers.. I've seen some a few months ago when i was looking for aroudn 18k-19k.. with around 40k mileson them...

check his website in his signature, should give you the information you need. He does a very good job, as he helped me do mine. As for the tailights i don't think he has ventured into that area yet....but knowing him he'll do anything lol

You can't clear the 99-01 tails because the whole lens is color. You can convert to 02+ $300 TL or aftermarket tails $200(check ebay for cheapest price). Direct plug in.

Why do the conversion? Just pick up a used Type S. A lot less trouble than trying to do it yourself.

The problem is I have mods and to take them all off my car and put them onto another isn't worth it, but then again, I've never owned a Type S, so it might be worth all the trouble.

Plus, I still owe $$ on my 99.

Trade in for a TLS. It will only seem expensive until you add up the cost of converting your car then it will seem like a bargain.

the only way you can have power comparible to the s is by doing i/h/e. With all my mods i can run an S, and have before in front of some a-cl guys. Also swapping the intake manifold is not that easy because the s has a dual stage setup whick opens at a certain rpm, you will have to wire that to work.

Do yourself a financial favor and drop $15 on a little red "S" emblem and slap in on the trunk. Violla!

ps--Just don't come to Florida looking to run with me...

Take the advice; trade in if you really want a Type-S.

But to amuse you here is what it would take and estimated prices with labor since it sounds like you would definitely need this. If we just focus on the engine, here is the difference and what is needed:

Higher Compression
Dual Stage Intake Manifold
Different Cams
VSA Throttle and Sensors (Assuming the same ABS valve body is used)
Different ECU Tuning
Transmission

$2000 - Shave the deck or heads or use a thinner gasket to achieve the 10.5:1 CR

$750 - Upper Intake Manifold, IMRC Actuator, IMRC Control Module, all wired and installed.

$750 - Cams installed.

$750 - VSA Throttle, Sensor, all wired and installed.

$1250 - ECU installed and necessary wiring changes made.

$4000 - Transmission installed and wiring changes made.

$9500 Total.

It would be less expensive to trade in as you will incur other hidden costs.

But a Type-S can add those items and acheive even more.

The intake manifold isn't too much to do and a simple RPM switch could handle the control duty. But there isn't too much to gain with this alone.

That is my point exactly, scalbert. No matter what I do, mine will NEVER do what a Type-S can.

r10Apple: I will never even consider it. That's just as bad as the guy a few weeks ago with the Type-SR on the back of his TL. Ughhh... PLus, I like the clean, no badge look on the back I have now.

since you will be voiding your warranty anyway, might as well just spray a 75 shot when needed
