Control of Gear 1 in Sport Shift
has anyone done an ECU mod to allow drivers control of Gear 1 in Sport Shift mode?
i know we'd all run into redline way too fast, but the take offs and added transmission control would be a plus

probably not worth it, considering you'd completely void your warranty most likely.
a better way is gate shifting. use the 1 - 2 - d3 - d4 method to go up the gears, that way you can hold first all the way through.

If you gate shift that is so bad for the transmission especially at the lower gears and at high revs. If you gas it in SS you will almost redline first. It will bring you up to 6500 rpms. Never gate shift (NO NO)

yah, its bad for the tranny, but what isnt bad for our transmission? ; )
i'm not talking about everyday driving here, i thought we were talking about optimal performance (i.e. drag racing)
who's gonna be first to do a cl-s 6 speed swap??

not sure about other manufacturers, but most likely yes, especially on more "sporty" cars.
on earlier tl's, pre-02 i believe, you could control the 1-2 shift.

The change was when the 2000TL went to a 5 speed the 1999 has the 4 speed that you can control 1-2 shift.

BMW has also got neat feautres (maybe on M3 for now?) that will do a rev-match blip of the throttle when you downshift. There are sportier modes on the european models.. I think you could hold any gear with it.

I drove an Audi A4 and with the SS you get to control all 5 gears....1 -> 5th and let me tell you that car would definately take us without a problem (a TL-P, never drove a TL-S). Having control of 1st gear makes a huge difference IMHO

still a Masshole
This is true. I've actually hit redline (6800-7000 rpms) before the car shifted to second.

can someone explain their reasoning behind the fact gate shifting is bad. as long as you dont hit red line(which doesnt matter anyway), all you are doing is restricting the car to 1st gear, until you allow it to upshift. Actually, i used to hate gate shifting, but in the tls, it is as fast as the SS and its SMOOTHER too. Plus you can hold it to redline.
Our trannies are controlled with ECU, it will never let you do anything to damage the car. does anyone have solid proof that gate shifting is bad?
