Compression

We intend to buy an Acura TL tomorrow. Upon passing our inspection and test drive we are going to run a compression check...What kind of numbers should we expect from the compression gauge? this is not a TYPE S motor, just a regular 3.2

Thanks for any input!

We won't buy a tired engine

That info does not really answer his question...
I just did a google search, fraid I cannot answer it. I think they should be around 160 PSI. Am sure someone here knows what PSI they should be at.

A 9.8:1 compression ratio should produce a minimum of 144 psi.

9.8 atmospheres in psi

From the manual
Above 930kPa (9.5kgf/cm.2, 135 psi)-200rpm

Maximum variation
Within 200kPa (2.0 kgf/cm.2, 28psi)

Thanks - Forum Members RULE

I just came from the STEALER (to ask this very question) and he said all his mechanics were too busy to talk with me...what happened to ACURA? When I bought my Integra in 87 (long gone) the service department was so very helpful and would do anything for you. Now this guy practically blows me off when I tell him I am buying a used car and need some advice...Well, I will do ALL the service on the Acura...except the safety recalls and the warranty claim on the tranny - if I need it. But other than that those guys will NEVER touch my sons car...

So I should expect between 135-144 with a max vairation of 25psi I am pretty confident in the motor at least posting those numbers, I will update this thread after I pull the numbers...

Thanks again!

Ya I am gonna get a manual for this car...which one is best?

Yes those #s are from the factory service manual. Stick within those specs. (mine at 200k was right at factory #s. If it was maintained before it should be good.

Helms manual is the best.

Thanks...

Getting close to the hour when we take the trip...

If anyone can tell me how do I know the Difference between the 2 white colors? I guess there is a Pearl White and a (SP) Trafetta White? Don't say look at the car, because I am not sure I'd know the difference if I saw it...

Also, From what I get from the Autotraderonline site there are 2 different trim levels, anyone can tell me how to differentiate?

Arigato Goziamus (Thank you in Japanese)

One has pearl in it one doesnt

Open the drivers door. There is a little sticker on the jamb.
This is the color code that will be on the sticker

NH-578 Taffeta White

NH-603P White Diamond Pearl

Got It

Well,
My son today purchased the Diamond Pearl White 99 Acura TL, it has 140K on it and pulled compression readings of 212,210,212,209,210, 208 (these numbers were considerably higher than what forum members told me I should pull - but hey they were better)...I was able to talk the guy down an additional $250 so my son got it for $5850. Has some surface wear as one would expect...

The guy was really cool, we used his 'shop' to seafoam the crankcase, drain the old oil, fill it with ROYAL PURPLE, Put in NGK Iridium plugs, and add the K&N air filter for the trip home...We went to the local Shell station Filled it with the 93 Octane Shell Super V, and added some TECHRON to the tank.

My son brought it home and SMOKED me repeatedly in the AVENGER

He cleaned and vacuumed the interior, and bought a water pump, timing belt, and a host of other accessories that I will put in tomorrow...

He has a really beautiful ride...thanks to everyone who contributed to this wonderful purchase...I am proud of him he really did it all on his own.

Should have gotten Taffeta White Congratulations, I do wish I had WDP at times, and then at other times I love my car not having a yellow hue to it

I think his son did join in another thread. Congrats on a great purchase and on doing all the things you should do right away (change plugs, seafoam, new water pump, belts, ect.).
