Coilover kit time.. choices within.. please advise

I have H&R Sports right now, and I want to upgrade to a coilover system.

I've looked around, and have come up with two choices.

1. Tein SS

2. Ground Control Coilover w/ damping adjustable shocks, like Koni or Tokico.

Now, the first choice would run about 900 dollars. The second set, I think, would be around... I don't know. 370 for the GC kit, plus 560 for Koni, so 930.

Now my question is, according to the Suspension section, there are two choices of GC Coilover kit. To be used to stock shocks, and to be used with Koni shocks only.

Well, is it possible to use it with any other shocks? What are other more affordable alternatives on shocks? I mean, the whole point of my looking into other kits than the Tein SS is so that I could save money.

Please help. Thank you.

I'll second that. The tein SS coil overs will give you a nice even drop, and provided you buy the EDFC, this enables you to change the ride quality on the go...it's an awesome setup, but be prepared to $$$ for it.

I think you the tein ss coils are 850 USD on a group buy, the EDFC about 325-350, and installation unless you do it yourself it a b*tch. I hear the wiring take a few hours, so expect about 200 atleast for the install.

That will put you somewhere in the 1300-1400 w/ installation...but you won't regret it!!!

well either will give him a nice even drop....since their both adjustable....the benifit to the tein setup is adjustable dampening on the go....but thats only if you purcahse the 350$ edfc....otherwise....the onlyh benifit i can think of is quaility...ground controls are poular in other tuning crowds but sleeves cant compare to a true coilover setup...but konis are very nice....they could possible make up for the ground controls not being up to par with the teins....

a question i have....what happens when the shocks on the teins wears out?...do you have to replace everythng?...if thats the case then the GC's and konis sounds better to me

Yeah, you have to replace the entire unit with the Tein setup when the shocks wear out.

yeah...so amybe the koni's will work out better for you depending on how long you plan on keeping the car?

also you have h&r sports right now?....its probably a finger gap to flush all the way around right?...just curious how low you want to go....or what exactly do you want out of a coil over system....the ability to raise and lower....or jsut go lower?....cause if you just want lower you could just buy the konis and set them on the lower perch....it should give you an inch all the way around....also i see you have a system....if its because your rear is sagging you could set the front on the lower perch and set the rear on the upper....just a seuggestion to save you money if all you want is to go lower...

Well, Koni Yellows are 560 for a set. And 350 for the Ground Control kit. That's 910, plus shipping. Compared to Tein SS, I don't know what I should do.

What I mainly want out of the coilover kit is the ability to adjust the damping (regardless of EDFC). I mean, both setups would give me that ability, but I don't know which one to go with.

Right now, I have a 1.5-2 finger gap up front and 1 finger gap in the rear. I plan on getting 18's soon, and I want the wheel well to be completely flush with the tire, probably with a finger gap all around. And stiffer damping in the rear.

I guess I'll just think about it. Thanks a lot for all the advice, guys.

ground controls suck for the TL. they bottom out like a mofo. if your gonna get coilovers, go with a true set-up like the tein ss or the nex ss or the zeal b6. if not, dont even bother wasting your money.

Koni & Ground Control.

Order custom spring-rates from GC...400F, 350R or something like that.

Custom rate GC's and Koni's work great!!

if all you car aobut is dampening then just get the konis and keep your h&r springs.....the koni's have an adjustable perch so you can get another inch lower with koni's...so you should be flush all the way around....you'll be saving yourself 3-4 hundred this way.....just a sugesstion..i plan on doing this when myh stock shocks go....so i'll be even lower wihtout haivng to pay for coil overs

koni's would work just as well with h&r's as they would with ground controls

and yeah oyu got to get an alignment after you have it installed..but its the same as if you just instlaled new springs...cuase you'll be lower so have more negative camber...and the konis would be adjustable like i think you thinking....in order to raise and lower it you would have to reinstall it (meaning take the spring off the shock).
