Thumbs up Cleared, Painted Headlights *pics*

Pretty happy with the results. I hope Imagestation's not acting up....

I REALLY want to swap out the orange bulbs with those amber ones Ive heard about, no color when off, amber-orange when lit.

6 coats of semi-gloss high-temp BBQ paint.

From these pics, you really cant tell just how black the housings are.

No complaints with Wayne. Big selection of TLs. I had them install the OEM kit upon purchase, they had to order it, but it was done very fast and they kept me updated on its progress.

First off, I just adhered to members' comments and advice, and also followed the FAQ, but here's my take on it........

I started 9am Saturday, finished 9am Sunday

-Once the headlights are off, I used a heat gun and heated about a 6 inch section of the headlight at a time, wedging a flat-head screwdriver in, then leaving it there. Once I had half of the light wedged with 3 or 4 flat-heads, I heated the entire opposite side for a few minutes, then they just pull apart SLOWLY !! The separating of the headlights took about 20 minutes on each side.

-The plastic chrome housing piece that sits in the clear shell was removed, and I applied 6 coats of high-temp semi-gloss BBQ paint with a 1/2" styrafoam applicator. No primer or anything, just applied the paint directly to the chrome. I let each coat dry for about 15 minutes in the sun before applying the next coat.

-The most time-consuming part of the job was removing the factory silicone bond that remained behind. I took johnnyb_s's advice and was sure to remove as much as I could of this stuff to ensure a tight re-sealing. I tried removing the old silicone both dry and heated. It is easier to remove when heated and soft, but once it starts to dry, the bonding power of the silicone is much harder to work with than the completely dry stuff. Hats off to my fiance who gave me an hour of her time to scrape this crap off with me . This part took over 2 hours, but you could eat off it when we were done.

-Cleaned all the lenses and housings with windex and warm water, then let them completely air dry outside. Did visual check for streaks, fingerprints, etc. Used a TON of automotive/marine clear 100% silicone sealant to re-seal them together. Once the first coat was applied, I just wrapped them in paper towels, then tightly duct-taped them together. I let them stand like this for about 30 minutes. I then applied an outer bead of the silicone, making sure to fill in any spots where it looked like air might even have a chance of getting thru. Re-wrapped and taped them, let sit for an hour outside. Steamed up the bathroom for about 15 minutes, un-wrapped the lights and let them sit in there for another 10 minutes to check for leaks.........no fogging or condensation !! Re-wrapped, let dry overnight, installed the next morning, voila !

There was about 4 hours of actual work, lots of waiting, but it was worth it

ok so it wasn't spray painted, you actaully painted it with the brush, i would have thought that it would leave streaks if it was actually painted cuz its pretty hard to paint so that there are no brush streaks

Spray-painting it will probably work better for you. Im very happy with my results, but a spray will look smoother.

I just did mine a few weeks ago. I used spray primer and spray paint. It came out flawless. The trick is to do multiple thin coats and let them dry in between.

Clear them out, but don't paint them black...it won't look good at all if you paint them.

No pics yet. This weekend I'll post some. I used Kryol black primer and then sprayed it with Kryol Ultra Satin Black. It came out great.

Wow that looks amazing. Great job. Any reason why you used high-temp paint? Does it really get that hot in there?
