Cleaning the Icebox air filter?? What do i use?

Hello all,

My icebox air filter came with oil but no cleaner, so what should i use to clean it? I don't feel like buying the Comptech cleaner if i can just get something from an auto store. Please let me know soon. thanks!

If it's a cotton gauze filter, you could just use a cleaning kit for a K&N filter. Most Auto parts stores carry a generic cleaning kit for less than the K&N kit.

Is there a K&N filter I could buy to replace the comptech one in my Icebox? If so what size?

Cheers!

It should be cleaned every 6000 miles. I'm on 5k oil changes, so I do them together. It's not a cotton gauze one, it's a two layer foam filter, so the oils and cleaners used are not the same as K&N.

I bought the recharge kit (both Uni and Comptech sell it for $11), and cleaned the filter about two weeks ago. The cleaner is very much like an engine degreaser. It's not soapy or foamy, but is very much like citrus engine brite - which would be a good alternative to use. Be careful not to use a cleaner that can damage the foam (like carb cleaner, etc.)

On the oil - you REALLY should use their oil. K&N and other oils aren't as tacky. It's almost like a lightweight chainsaw bar oil.

Got this from Comptech's website, hope it helps!

"Complete service kit, both Oil and Cleaner.
All you'll need to maintain your Comptech/Uni filter.
Your Uni filter should be cleaned
at each oil change or when it looks dirty.
Just spray on, let it soak for a couple
minutes, rinse with warm water, and let
dry. Re-oil with Uni filter oil."

Didn't realize it needed to be cleaned that frequently, that is good to know.

I have the oil to oil the filter, but do you thiink I need the spray to clean it before it is rinsed in warm water??

Personally, I don't think you need it. Get some citrus engine brite - it will do the same thing.

Do they sell the oil by itself? I've only seen the "recharge kits."

-edit-

Were you asking if you need any spray at all, or their spray in particular? If you don't spray cleaner on it at all and run it under water it won't get clean. You've got to break the oil down somehow.
