check out these pics of some metal work

you have to manually enter this in and hit enter, otherwise it wont work.

its a really time consuming process. after finding an image that could work, you have to use a drill press to make pilot holes and then carefully hand saw it using a jewelers saw. i then hand polished it starting from 400 grit sand paper. these pics are recent, but i did it last summer so its a bit dirty. i was originally looking for a cool tribal spider design so i surfed the web for tattoo sites and didnt get a lot of clear images that i could use. i ended up just using the spider from the Soundstream Taruntula amp. Kind of stupid since i'm running Xtant amps huh?

I really like how those came out...would you consider doing some for a price? They wouldn't be anything big...just something that may be about a foot long and 3 inches high.

well, heres the thing:

everything depends on the image. like, say in spider image, it was simply black and white. no shades. all i did was cut the negative (black) parts out. it can get much more complicated than that. are all the black parts joined together? if not, pieces might fall out. with words, say, you want to cut out some kanjii letters. if you look closely in the picture with the japanese characters, some pieces are missing. again, i cut out the negative parts, and some pieces had to be saved for later, then suspended on clear plexiglass. i lost a few because its been sitting around for so long. i'm going to recut them soon.

http://www.geocities.com/legacy98/Dvc00288.jpg ---> use the same method to view this pic. (the jewelers saw)

there is also the issue of angles. all three of those pieces used to be one whole thing. i had to have them cut into three separate pieces because.. if you look at my saw, its about 6 or 7 inches high (which is no prob, dont need more than that) but only about 5 inches deep. that means i can only cut 5 inches into the material lengh wise, and that is only limited to a STRAIGHT cut of 5 inches. angles will be harder. for mine i went to the Glassell school of arts and illegally went to a class while the teacher wasn't there to use their equipment. i used a saw that was over a foot long depth wise, which allowed me to cut certain angles, but also made it significantly harder. i think i went through about 15 saw blades. some i had to replace because they wore down. working on such a large piece is really a pain in the ass, because i didnt have a proper "desk" to saw it on. it kept flopping around, and i broke some blades due to that also. anyway, long story short, besides the painstaking process of cutting, there is also the sanding involved. i would do it, but because of the amount of labor involved (i will guarantee a flawless product because i'm a perfectionist) i wont do it unless i was compensated nicely =)

i do have an alternative if you dont want to pay $$$. there is a guy on the Accord V6 board that does some cutting with stainless steel and he actually has a computer program and cutter to do his work. if you have simple designs or just words even, i'm sure he is a better way to go. his hame is SSaccord or something? i'll check it out for you if you want.

who me?

a) sculpture/metal work/jewelry making is one hobby of mine. thought it would be a cool project.

b) CNC machining costs money.. something i dont have right now

otherwise, its a great alternative. gives me more options on designs and metals i can use.
