check eng light/cat converter

my check engine light came on and the dealer says i need a new cat. my car has 88k miles so im not covered under warranty. how much does this run? how long would it take them? could i get a loaner? Is it bad that i still drive my car alot with the engine light on? Sorry for so many questions, but i just got my car out of the shop with the tranny and i really dont want to spend a lot of time with it in there again.
Thanks for any help
Matt

i just had the same thing done at 70,000... the cat has a warranty to 80,000 on the TL. i would try to make a deal with your dealer, since this is a KNOWN ISSUE with the TL's and CL's, and your barley out of warranty... and play it off like youve been driving with this for 3,000 miles because the dealer couldent get you scheduled or something... try to use the warranty extension in your favor

otherwise i think my bill came to around $280, i dont tottaly remember. mine was under warranty but it still showed what it would have cost me...

honeslty dude, i bet the cat is still pretty ok, the CEL code for that is real sensative. just unplug the battery for 3 minutes (the ground, not the positive) and clear the computer. im willing to bet your CEL will not come back on for a long time....

If I am correct, Catalytic Converter will runs you around $550 (18160-P8C-A00). Of course, that's parts price only.

And yeah, that should be under powertrain warranty. It's not going to hurt you trying to have them cover under warranty. Try other dealers, too. Good luck!!
