Changing Tranny Fluid

How does everyone dispose of their old transmission fluid? With all this 3x3 changing, there must be a lot of it to get rid of...or, of which to get rid.

the local parts store or quick lube place will accept it free of charge by usa law
Place in sealed containers- like used oil jugs or similar- for safe transport
If you have local Hazmat dropoff thats another place

It oil as far as recycling it goes

That will work, or like the village I live in, they have a free oil drop off. Just go dump it off in a huge tank and good to go. Might want to call your city hall to see if you have something like this.

I have doubts about 3x3 method. I know everyone thinks its the best way, but its not proven. First of all, this is not what Honda recommends, they recommend 3qt drain and fill. I believe there is a reason for this, the tranny is made of glass, so by changing all fluid at once you stress it with a lot of new cleaning agents. Maybe the idea is to blend in fresh fluid slowly to avoid problems.

If its done from the get go its fine. I have seen the dealers do the 3x drain fill as well. If your doing it for the first time on a 2ook trans it probably isnt the brightest idea.

Same here. We have a bunch of oil drop off facilities to get rid of it.

Thanks, guys. I have a parts store nearby, so will try that first. I wasn't sure if it was handled like oil, but sounds like they may be putting it all in the same containers.

I'm only changing 3qts today - using Amsoil for the new. I will slowly transition to full Amsoil over time, 3qts at-a-time.

I'm also changing out my tensioner pulley assembly today. I changed just the pulley a couple of weeks ago, which had a bad bearing for sure, but I'm still getting some squeaks and think the tensioner arm may be shot as well. Wish I had done it all the first time. Doh!

on the ac tensioner you should replace the entire unit, the arm and roller all together

for fluid change to AMZ in the trans you must do a 12 qt 3x3 to get all the honda fluid out and the amz in- thats 12 qts of amzoil

They are not supposed to mix them together and you are a test pilot by doing it

For most drivers 3 qts once a year is good enough on honda fluid
Honda only calls for the 3x3 if you have added Dextron3 fluid- that stuff eats the trans in a hurry and must be removed- so the major `fluid push thru` is required to rid the system of contamination

So when is the right time to change fluid? do we even know if changing fluid more often then 30k/3yr is going to do anything for you? After reading all the stories about trany failures I have not seen a correlation between how often you change your fluid and when it fails. Is 30k miles or 3 years to drain fill 3 qt is too long? According to service manual it would be considered severe service.

There is an obvious correlation between regular maintenance (or lack thereof) and motors and transmissions. Changing fluid keeps them clean (among other things), and clean mechanical assemblies usually perform better and for longer.

I was told every 15,000 by Honda, but I try not to go a day over 10,000.

You just reminded me, I have to change mine also. I'm not trying to do the full 3x3 because I'm the 3rd owner of my TL so a few months back I did a "drain 3 and fill 3" and drove.

And that was like 9k ago. So I'm in for change. The more you do the 3x1 the better your cleaning that tranny case!
