Changin Rear Shocks?

How Hard is it to change rear shocks on are cars. I've done it on other vehicles before, but I know sometimes are cars tend to be trickier.

Can I get some input on the difficulty...perhaps a How to? and maybe even some reccommendations on which ones to buy.

replacing the rear shocks are no different than changing the fronts. the only thing difficult about it is reaching the bolts behind the rear deck which requires you to remove the rear seat. otherwise, pretty straight forward if you have standard tools

It is easy to do as said, but you will also need to have the compression tool to seperate the coil spring from each shock. with the right tool it is easy to do as well.

Not to start an argument or anything... but i've changed rear shocks w/out a compression tool and i didnt have to go inside the vehicle and take any bolts out. So from that i would say are cars are trickier then others.

What car can you take the springs off with out spring compressors? Most cars you have to climb in the trunk pull back the carpet and take the bolts out. On the TL you spend 3 min removing the back seat and remove the bolts for the shock. I wouldnt call that tricky.

99.9% of cars out there the springs are under tension and should NOT be removed without spring compressors. Its a good way to take a arm off when those go flying (and ive seen them go flying)

The jeep is the same way. The Shock Pops off you put the new one on, maybe we have a misunderstandin here. I just want to replace the shocks not the springs. only the shocks.

I just looked at some pictures of our cars and realized that the Tl's springs are around the shocks.

I know Jeeps and Minivan's do not have this setup and I assume with some research I will find many other cars have a similar setup. So I stick by my idea that the our cars are sometimes trickier.

By the way I see why you need a spring compressor for our cars now. Just didn't delete the I just want to replace the shocks from my other post. also there should be a g at the end of misunderstanding.

There is nothing "tricky" about it. It's straight-forward as any other thing I've seen for our cars.

Great DIY here:

Info on 3RD GEN Seat Removal. Not sure how similar they are.

Oops! Forgot this:

https://acurazine.com/forums/car-parts-sale-361/fm-modulators-group-purchase-173827/

Service Manual Scans on Susp Removal/Replacemnt. Again, 3G, but *very* similar.

You can do this. Total noob here when I did mine (3G) a few months ago. I'd say 5/10. Mechanically really pretty easy. Figuring out the little tricks to disassemble/reassmble the puzzle is what's hard.

If you've got a freind, extra hands are always helpful. If one of you has some experience and/or is mechanically inclined, so much the better.

You can get a Torque Wrench and Spring Compressor as a free loaner (you have to leave a deposit) at AutoZone.

They dont use struts. they have separate coils or leaf springs and shocks. Most cars use a coil on shock setup. You will have to get coil spring compressors and compress the springs to take the chock out of it.
