Question Center Cup Holder Doors

OK - last week they got stuck (cell phone charger cord in the way inside) and had to <gently> force them open. Now they will not stay shut and don't close "evenly" (one lags behind the other while shutting).

I found a service advisory on the NHTSB (www.nhtsa.dot.gov) website about this happening, but no description on how to "reset/realign". Anybody else see this happen/know how to resolve? Really would prefer not to get hit up for the $70/hour my Acura dealer charges for something so minor. . .

Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks, but not on a '99 with 96K miles. . .

I had the same issue at one point with my 02 tl-s... I was able to fix it by kinda messing with it. Hold one of the doors steady while pushing / pulling on the other, and just slowly apply pressure until you it *clicks* on the next tooth. It took some messing around with it but I got it after a few minutes, and it works like new again.

I was so relieved when I fixed it that I didn't mess up my car.

Can you please offer a little more detail on how you did this? Mine's like this too, if there is a solution that doesn't require $100 for a new cup holder I'm all ears! What position do you hold it steady? Pics would help!

if you remove the plastic pieces that run from center console up the sides you can then remove the cupholder assembly. there a few gears inside that control how quickly the doors close. you can probably play with these and fix your issue

These are the wood-grain or black marble j-shaped pieces that run from the front of the arm rest up to the dash. Pull 'up' alongside the shifter and cupholder, and pull 'back' from alongside the stereo and climate control. They are held in by clips.

Next, I would recommend removing the two screws in the bottom of the storage area under the arm rest, then pull back a little toward the rear. This extra few inches will make removing and reinstalling the cupholder easier.

You will see four screws (two either side) holding the cupholder in. Remove them and then pull the cupholder out. There are four gears on the front of the cupholder that control the opening and closing. There is only one spring, and it is inside the top gear on the passenger side; the gears transfer the force of the spring to the other side. Play with the gears, and maybe pull one of them out of the teeth and reinsert if they are off. They have screws holding them in which can be removed if necessary. Please note that the doors will not open properly on their own unless held in their upright position as when installed; they engineered them for gravity to help open them, so they have to be sitting upright in order to work.

Thanks. I had recently removed my entire console, so was very familiar.
