Car suddenly won't start...

So I was driving around tonight no problem got back to school and parked and shut it off...came back out a minute later to move the car and it won't start. It doesn't crank at all (no noise). Lights turn on and radio is fine. Last maintenance I did was i changed my spark plugs with Bosch Platinum Plus #4030. Don't know what to do, don't have a garage or tools at school...

Don't know what it was but I just went outside to try it again and it didn't work the first 3 times I turned it...just heard a click. Then took the key out and tried again and it worked. Drove it around for a few min and then shut it off, and started up again fine...really weird, just glad its working again!

u didnt leave anything on while u went to school? could have drained the battery, check your connection, try banging on the starter while someone keeps trying to turn the car on (usually works if your battery is good)
my radio was playing over night bc for some reason it didn't fold down and turn off. drained my battery, luckily i was at home and charged the battery up and never had the problem again.

When you turned the key to the second spot did all the red lights come on before you tried to start it?

It's either a bad ignition switch or a bad starter. Most likely the ignition switch since your car is a 99. There was even a recall on them but those fail too. Next time it happens, jiggle the keys in the ignition a little bit and watch for the dash lights flickering. If they do, then you know it's the switch.

I agree that a failing ignition switch would be one suspect. My 1999 TL is on its third ignition switch.

There is a recall on the ignition switch and Acura will install a new one for free if it hasn't been done yet. If you're not sure if it's been done yet, call Acura with the car's VIN number and they can tell you.

And the replacements can and do fail also. Acura won't replace more than one but you can buy one for about $50.

If you want to try replacing it yourself, here's a great DIY post by forum member 6MTUA5:

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/diy-99-tl-ignition-switch-686000/

Good luck and post an update when you figure out the problem.

I've been having the same problem for the past 2 weeks, sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesnt. I just need to find the time to go take it in and have it looked at.

Yeah I had the ignition switch replaced through the recall already...hopefully it's not shot because I can't do much with it at school besides bring it to a local acura dealership which will probably not help me at all

Just because you had it replaced doesnt mean it wont go again. Many have had 2-3 go. Look in the DIY page. There is instructions on replacing it. Its Very easy.

I used to have this problem on a 97 rl. If I put the key in too fast the car didn't read the chip and prevented me from starting it up. I'd have to remove the key and try again.

Alright so it happened again today

I had my ignition switch replaced by Acura at least 3 years ago so should i be purchasing part # 35130-S84-305 ?

According to partsgeek.com they say that part # is for 99 TL's that had the recall... http://www.partsgeek.com/gbparts/199...ek+Google+Base

(Second part on that web page)

Is that correct? If so do you think this is the best price....

http://www.hondasubaruparts.com/part...FRoSFQodczCKOA It's $35.

That appeatrs to be the new part number based on a post in the following thread:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...=35130-s84-305

But you might want to call your local Acura dealer's parts department to be sure.

And $35 is a very good price if that's the correct part. I think I paid about $50 for the one that I bought and installed.

Install it yourself. There is a DIY on it and is very easy.

Also use this link. It will tell you the correct part# and their price

bet they suggest you replace the bosch plugs with the correct approved NGK plugs
Have to have the right parts in there to get a baseline

DO that yourself and save big dollars- labor 1.5 hours at $125 per hour!!
plus they get 20-25 per plug while, you can buy them at parts stores for 50 for the set of 6!!

Just got the call from Acura...I'm F*cked. It's gonna be $565+tax for a new starter installed. Guess I got to bite the bullet and just be thankful this is my first problem with my '99 TL

If you haven't approved the work yet, tell them to stop. Pay for the diagnosis, and do it yourself, or have an independent shop do it for substantially less.

There is no way I would be able to install a starter myself...how much do you really think a gas station would do it for me, getting a used part & labor? There doing the work tomorrow so technically I could call and cancel but I rather not.

i think u over paid . how much did the starter cost you? a new one would run u $212.
part # 06312-P8A-506RM STARTER MOTOR ASSY. (RMD) 1999 TL $211.59
a local auto shop would cost around $100-$150. or u could have done it youself and its quite easy to do and its right in front so u have to more or take anything off.

Of course I overpaid...I went to a local Acura dealership near my school. I know it's not the best option but it was the quickest fix and the least hassle for me. I paid $287 in labor and $262 in parts and got a 10% discount. Although the $99 diagnostics is not listed could it have been in the labor/parts category or do you think they didn't charge me for that since I let them do the work?

In any case I'm happy my Acura is back on the road & I have to say it sounds ALOT better when starting it up now.

sounds like your starter and or cylinoid is out.

about 125 dollars to replace.

although if its just the cylinoid, you can take to screwdrivers (any metal tools will work) and touch the big bolt to the little bolt on the starter/cylinoid and it will crank up to at least get you to where you can park your car. just make the two screwdrivers tap and they will spark so dont freak, but after a few tries your car will have started.

just some info in case somebody ever gets in a bind.
