- - Car Registration in Maryland - -

does this make sense?

i drove my car from vancouver, and i am trying to get my car registered in Maryland. (ie. get tags).

i supplied all the paperwork that the MVA requested
1. customs forms (free).
2. Maryland Safety Inspection ($80)
3. Auto Insurance (too much)
4. Ownership papers

next thing i know, the lady behind the counter is asking me to pay 5% of the current value of my car.

WHAT THE HECK FOR!!! i was so frustrated that i forgot to ask the reason for it.

customs already mentioned that i dont have to pay the 5% duty since the car was made in the US and ive already paid 17% Sales and Luxury tax in Canada.

any canadians on this forum that have gone through a similar experience???

much appreciated.

Welcome to Maryland.

When I moved here 15 years ago from Massachusetts I was hit with the same thing, so it's got nothing to do with you coming from Canada.

Maryland seems to think that they can charge 5% tax on your car when you move here just as if you had bought it in Maryland. I am not sure on the justification, but if you want to register your car here you have to pay it. Luckily its on the current value, not the price you actually paid for it. I moved here with a relatively old car so the fee wasn't much.

On the upside there is no vehicle inspection after you register it, only an emmissions test every two years, and that's about $20. There are also no yearly excise taxes on your vehicle either.

I feel for you. Maryland has some of the highest fees in the country. Wait until you try to buy a house. Then you'll really be screaming.

Where in Maryland are you? I'm in the Ellicott City area.

at least you don't have to pay yearly car tax as in VA. VA sucks

kcroberge:

British Columbia's insurance and registration is one and the same. and there is no such thing as excise tax (what is it and how much is that anyway??)
all we have is emissions testing (cash cow for the gov't).
i am in route 40 by the 695 beltway exit. catonsville, i believe.

ive been to VA a few times. that place is beautiful. IMO, they can charge whatever tax they want.

on the other hand, Baltimore/MD should start creating incentives for people to come into the city. not the other way around. (ie. an ugly woman should have at least a good personality).

I feel your pain fighting fish. I moved to Maryland from North Carolina and paid 3% tax there, so to make up the difference I had to pay 2% of the current value. That was still about $550.

do all states have this excise tax?

pianoman41 03-06-2003 10:56 PM

MA has a yearly excise tax. It's $25 per $1000 value of the car, and is a different (declining) percentage of the full value each year.
