Question Can you resurface slotted cross drilled rotors??

Ok so the dealership tells me they will put new brake pads and resurface my slotted/cross drilled rotors for about $350....i took it in to meineke, and they told me my brakes are fine and that they you don't resurfce cross drilled rotors. You just replace them when they get "too thin"

So whats the deal? can i or can i not resurface?

Resurfacing rotors period isnt usually a good idea, Especially with our shitty brake system. Yes you can resurface them most dont want to, unless they are newer. You take too much off and it defeats the purpose of the slotted rotors. For the price acura is charging you can get new rotors and pads.

what brand slotted rotors??? how many miles on them- what pads?
Stay away from the places you went and look in the phone book for a private owner honda/acura specialist shop- they are in every town thanks to people hopping up hondas. They will also know brakes.

Some rotors are designed that when the slots get worn away, the rotor is ready to be replaced- thats usually a few or more sets of pads before that happens~
Stock rotors last 2 pad sets for most users- then need new rotors due to severe shake, Resurfacing them removes so much material- they would be below minimum allowable thickness!

Yes some shops with good equipment in proper sharp condition CAN resurface slotted rotors.
The question is- WHY do you think they need it?
What are your brakes doing?

well i bought the rotors and brake pads as a set on ebay about 2.5 years ago and since the last 2-2.5 years i drove a lot! i mean like 30-40,000 miles. So there is a little shaking of the steering wheel when braking, but nothing too excessive. The funny thing is the dealership told me i need to new brake pads soon and they will resurface the rotors for free...but the other shop told me my brakes and rotors are fine and that i don't need to get them anytime soon.

i kinda feel the dealership is just trying to rip me off.

If the pads are good, just try bedding them in.

My rotors were worn so bad with new pads, the car shook even when I wasn't braking. I got them resurfaced temporarily until I can afford R1 Concepts.

Has anyone physically removed a wheel or 3 and looked at the brake pads and rotors- done measurements of thickness- measure rotor runout to see if they are out of flat,

some pads dont have that center slot to tell when its at minimum (usually 2mil material left), so you have to pull a caliper and look at the pad surface-its condition and depth, check for heat stress cracks and more

Many gen2 are having the brake calipers wear out based on age/mileage or failure to change the brake fluid every year... and stop working properly
Has the brake fluid been flushed? supposed to be every year
Even no grease in the slider pins, or the slider tabs for the pads can be gunked up
will cause brake problems
Like I said before-- Meineke and the dealer are NOT the places for a modified TL
to have the brake worked on
Look in the phone book for a shop if you dont work on your own car
Or meet a local ziner who does!
