Can the outside temp gauge be reset?

I've only had my '02 TL for 2 weeks now, but the outside temperature gauge has never been correct yet. It is always about 6-8 degrees F too high. I thought this might be due to the hotter surface near the road (in Texas the air temp is at 90-95 midday and hotter near the street surface), but I checked it this morning at 7am in my garage and driveway and it still was about 8 degrees high (air temp was 70 and sun was barely up). Is there a way to recalibrate or reset the gauge? Or do I need to go back to the dealer on this?

Yes. It can be adjusted. I don't remember how tho. Mine was right so I didn't do anything. There was a post about it long time ago. Maybe you can do a search for it.
Or can someone help this guy out??

yes, I would like as much info as possible on this. My car always shows the wrong temp. I cant take too much heat, so when my car says 90 I begin to faint. =) Even though my co-worker says that it's only like 70. I see 90 therefore I feel 90.

It will reflect road heat for the first few minutes after starting your trip, but will gradually adjust to the actual temperature. Whenever I park and first get in the car it reads as high as 113 (in the relentless Florida sun) but after a few miles it goes down to the actual temperature.
As far as adjusting the gauge -- you can. With the car running hold the SELECT and RESET buttons for the odometer. After several seconds you'll notice the temperature display "scrolling" through numbers, i.e. -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3. Release the two buttons when the desired correction factor is displayed. (i.e. if you feel the gauge reads 2 degrees too high, release the two buttons when the display reads "-2"). You can repeat this procedure several times if you need to alter the reading by more than 3 degrees in either direction.
Finally, there is a manual way to recalibrate the sensor that is described in the Helm service manual. It involves physically removing the sensor, but if any of you would like scans of the actual procedure, I'd be glad to provide them.

My 2000 can display temps of 100+... I don't imagine they'd have changed the display for 2001 but anything is possible.
Try shining a flashlight directly onto the temperature reading and see if you can see space for the first "1".

You can indeed adjust the temp as described above. Mine was only 3 or 4 degrees too high and I adjusted mine and it's just perfect now but I must drive for about 10 minutes above 20mph to get an accurate reading. Just sitting in the garage will always make it read way too high even if the car is cold. I don't understand that but it's true. Sitting in traffic doesn't seem to make it rise abnormally either--whatever!

I know that it CAN be adjusted, I believe the maximum is 3 degrees at a time.
I remember that it is done with the select/reset buttons used for trip odometer. If I can find the instructions on exactly how to do it, I'll post them up.

I know, but it might as well be. Couldn't they put it somewhere cool, away from the engine? I've had passengers comment on how far off the reading is. I just mumble something about having to be going 35 MPH.

I made the recommended adjustment and it worked fine, but you cannot adjust more than +/-3 degrees. I adjusted it down -3 degrees, then actually waited 2 days and tried to adjust it down an additional -3 degrees. The computer knew that I already did that once and didn't change the temp any more. Oh well, at least its closer. I'll have to do mental arithmetic everytime I look at it.

Outside temperature gauge
Recently the battery had to be taken out for a few minutes and of course the radio had to have the code put in and now i've noticed the outside temp is not on. How do i get this started back working?
thanks
thanks
What does the temp show?
If it reads something like "---" instead of " 86" it means the temp sensor was unplugged for some reason.
The sensor is easily located at the front of the bumper behind the license plate, Just stick your hand in the lower air ram and you will find it.

Temp sensor doesnt get reset or turned off when disconnecting the battery. If its not on now check the wiring going to the sensor.
For troubleshooting we need to know exactly what it shows!
This is an Unplugged Temp Sensor: "---"
This is a Functioning Sensor: " 85"
This is not normal: " "
The temp sensor dial has 3 spaces for numeric read, It must show something. But 3 blank spaces is not normal. Perhaps the Temp sensor is dead?
