CamaroZ28 vs 00 TL

So who will win? I know this middle-aged guy at work who has a
CamaroZ28

and thinks it's the absolute shit. Of course, it's a POS, the driver side door wont open so he has to climb in thru the passenger side, etc... but I want to race him. The quarter mile times are pretty close on our cars, but I think the TL would eat his lunch and crush his juice box. What do you all think?

What year is it?

A 1999 Camaro for example has 305 hp and 335 ft pounds of torque and weighs 3400 pounds.

I don't think you're going to win.

BTW, I'm in Corvallis so if you see a black 1st generation TL its me

actually his car pumps 305hp on a 5.7L engine (this is spec from a recent model)... i doubt that you can beat him a straight run with your 00 tl-p even though you are almost 100 pounds lighter. camaros (SS or Z whatever this is) are pretty strong... until you throw them a couple of curves that is then their outdated everything-else starts to look horrible

imo, they are damn ugly too.

What year Z28?

If it's an LT1 or LS1, then he's going to eat you alive.

If it's one of those 305's, then you have a chance, depending on how modded he is.

By the way, 98+ may have been advertised at 305 hp, but it was much the same engine that powered the Vette - 350hp. In '01, they received Z06 intake manifold and other miscellaneous parts and their hp secretly got a boost. If I remember right, a member on LS1 dynoed his bone stock '02 WS6 (rated at 325 hp on paper) and it put down 330-some hp at the wheels. Yeah, someone had fun with that car at the factory. They are disgustingly powerful. Of course, that was a factory freak, but still way out of the ordinary freak range. Most '01-'02 were putting down about 300-305 at the wheels in stock form. Sick, sick, sick.

Thanks for the laugh.

Have you ever been in an LS1 F-body through the turns? Especially one with the 1LE suspension option? They fucking carve corners like no other. People think that just because it's big and heavy, it handles like shit. But GM did alright with the suspension on those cars.

Yup. Bargain fun

Of course, you get bargain interior to go with it. I personally find them cramped and uncomfortable but hey, to each his own.

Its a great "American" icon (built in Quebec)

That's fine. That's your personal preference.

But I just don't see the need for talking bad about a car when you don't have the facts straight. Don't take this the wrong way, but I've heard of a lot of young ricers say the exactly same line -- "Yeah, they are fast until you throw some corners at them. I'll kill 'em in the twisties."

Then the F-body proceeds to keep up with them through the turns (impressive, considering they weight about 1.5 times the weight of an ordinary sport compact) then simply outpowers them coming out of the apex.

I've got a lot of respect for the LS1 F-body; in fact, my dad and I are thinking about picking up an '02 silver WS6 (rare color... came back for the last year production) and modding the hell out of it. Your usual I/H/E along with heads and cams, you're looking at an easy 450 rwhp. Let's not even talk about forced induction... well, I will say this, though -- stage 3 turbo is around 600 hp at the crank, before heads or cams. Big money for the kit, but it gives back lots of horsepower for the money.

Of course, most of the money went into the engine and drivetrain; the interior, along with overall fit and finish is typical GM. But nothing you can't live with.

If a Camaro fell into my lap for free, I'd take it Of course, I'd have to do a custom interior...

But you're right, a lot of respect has to be given to those cars. Fast as stink, lots of mods are available and most of all, they're fun.

Sorry i forgot to include some vital information, it is a 96, which i believe is a 325 horse engine. Thanks for all your input.

Ken1997TL, we should start a meet for Oregon TLs

OK, from MSN Autos , the Z28 that year had 285hp and 325tq. i would not do it if i were you. if he knows how to drive you'll be left in the dust. but hey, look at it this way, you can't beat every car all of the time. as nice as it would be

Naww-

Until you gave the year I was about to say that if it were a mid-eighties IROC you'd wipe the road with him. God, those things were slow.

I had an 86' Shelby Charger Turbo (1 of 387 in Blue over Silver and stock) and put many of those things on the trailer.

Hehe, well thanks for everyone's input. I guess I was pretty sure I couldn't win, but it was a fun discussion anyway. I'd be afraid to race him anyway because he's the type of guy who thinks drunk driving is cool and fun. He might drive "dirty" hehehe. Hate to have some shitty camaro sideswipe my TL mad max style or something.

Is it a V8 or a V6? If it's a V8, it's an LT1 -- low 14's in the quarter stock and that's real-life figure, not some magazine number that was SAE-corrected.

If it's a V6... put your title down on the race.

Not for nothing, but if a guy has a Z28 in the latest body style (the one that reached from '93 to '02, I think), he is going to beat you pretty bad. Going as far back as 1990, the Z28 had a 0-to-60 time of around 6 seconds, and as far ahead as 1998 and beyond, the Z28 has a 0-to-60 time in the mid-to-low 5's and a quarter-mile time of under 14 seconds. Unless you got some serious stuff on your TL-P, you aren't going to beat him.

It doesn't really matter if he could open his door on the driver's side or not, all that matters in this situation is what under the hood and what kind-of driver he is. Come to think of it, the TL-S would have some problems with the Z28, which doesn't bode well for the TL-P.

Yeah, he doesnt have any mods, and my friend says he even did something to block up his air intakes so it would "look cooler" my TL is bone stock, so i'm sure I can't beat him. Oh well

Carve corners like no other, huh? Not exactly. Their suspensions ARE really limited due to the fact the rear is a solid axle. Good for straight line acceleration, bad for handling potential.

True, but it's still quite a handler.
