Brake caliper seized W/pics

Hello all, I have a 2003 Acura TL. I went to do my brakes this weekend when I went to the the rear pass side I realized my brake caliper was seized and needs to be replaced. My question is how does this usually happen and what causes it? This was my first time I replaced the brakes in the rear, as I was told awhile ago that the front brakes do the majority of braking. Is this correct? Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Well seeing how rusty that is, that would cause it to fail. Its probably long overdue! Seeing the elements will cause calipers to go to crap. Improper maintenance can be a culprit too. Are you from the northern states?

Yes, the front brakes do most of the braking.

Looks like the rubber seal is damaged or did you do that to take a pic. Anyway as the piston pushes in and out it can rust. That rust can cause damage to the rubber seal and then more rust occurs. I've rebuild calibers before but wouldn't even try with that one. Last time I rebuild one I told myself it was the last.

No I didn't rip the seal it was like that. And yes I live in New York and all the rust it comes with it lol..

That caliper has seen better days. Replace with one from Auto Parts store and get on your way!

If was my car and I was doing work I would replace both rear calipers, the other side could be on borrowed time. At least pull it and inspect it to save you a headache further down the road.

Yeah, that looks terrible. I would assume the other side is on borrowed time too.
