A bit of a Burning smell coming from brand new rotors?

I just got my rotors replaced in the fronts today. The brakes are absolutely outstanding. However after running the car like really hard for about 10 min, I smelt a bit of a burning smell coming from the front of the car. I immediately relaxed on the gas until I got home to determine the cause of the smell, and when I got home, and bent down near the wheel, the smell definitely came from inside the wheel.

Is it normal to smell a burning smell after replacing the front rotors, and driving the car really hard?

any ideas?

Aren't you supposed to be easy on your new breaks for the first 200 miles?

anyone else know? Could it be a layer on my rotor which has been taken off by the pads?

any ideas?

The manual for the car says the same thing. On new breaks (for break in purposes) your supposed to take it easy for at least the first 200 miles.

Pads being broke in, like a snow ball in hell! Don`t sweet it, unless they start pulling or smoking!

quick question guys.

After applying the brakes on hard applications only, I notice there's like a grinding noise. It almost sounds like the calipers are grabbing the pads at the last second, and stopping the car.

It only happens right before the car stops, when going like 5 MPH...

is this normal.

it's like a cccccccccrrrrrrrrhhhhh noise...try to sound that out!!!

You're always coming with this crazy stuff man, look, you already went ballistic on the brakes so its too late to try to be nice to the brakes, if you smell the brakes burning you were doing more than just testing them. Good luck with the duration of your new brakes.

thanks dude. Yah I know, I guess you could call me a perfectionist. See what i want is my brakes to be able to take a lot of ****, then I give them a 5 minute break, and kick the hell out of the again. What's with this?

I mean since yesterday already i feel like the brakes have loosened up. I must say they don't build cars like they used to. My brakes in the '98TL were far better then these. Whatever it ain't the end of the world!!!

Health is more important then a car.

give everything like 100 miles to break in and see if the noises persist. If they do just take it to the dealer and have them get rid of the noise.

If I only had a chalkboard and a PhD...

Look, you have to properly bed new rotors on a car when you first put them on. That means gentle, slow stops for a period of time--ideally a couple of days, followed by gradually harder stops in a series before returning to normal driving. If you just got new ones then drove off the lot and stomped them to no end (which sounds like what you did), you probably already fu(ked them up.

The crunch is indeed your brakes and it only comes during a full-on panic stop with your ABS in full, active glory (remember your other awfully similar post).

Maybe you ought to log off for awhile and read your manual. Maybe save up for Bondurant or something as well...And remember this, your on a Canadian public road, not Mont Treblanc, and this isn't the SCCA, it's your stock automobile...

yah you're probably right about that. But who has time to read those damn manuals. And no I didn't stomp on the brakes from the moment I got out of the dealership. So long as the brakes don't pulsate on the highway, then I have no problem with them.

In any event, I did have to stop last night quite hard due to a child running out in front of my car. The brakes worked to their full potential and I was quite pleased with the ability for them to stop the car. For the next little while I will take it easy on the brakes.

Thanks guys.

very funny...I get it , don't worry!!!

I mean yes this is partially my fault this brake **** (I love to drive like the F1 drivers in my stock TL-S), but also there is definitely a known issue with these damn brakes. I mean the fact that Acura denies that there is a problem with the brakes in the TL is luticrous. I would say any average driver will have more problems with the brakes in their TL then any other manufacturer.

These brakes obviously are not very solid, and can easily be f*cked up, depending on your driving style.

Speaking of "pushing" your car, might want to mull this over the way things are going...

We could go back and forth all day, you know that right? My patience to entertainment ratio isn't the same with you as that with a certain other someone...So, that being said, you have probably already fried your poor, new rotors. Doing panic stops during your F1 fantasies will continually fry both new and aftermarket rotors with regularity. A rotor/pad is a wear and tear item--remember that. You are also tooling around in a 3,400lb sedan whose performance overdrives the stockers anyway--especially the way it sounds like you drive. I will also do you a favor (and at the same time deprive some of us from future laughs for which I'm sorry): If you think a $2,400 Brembo kit won't warp or fail any differently with extreme use, you are wrong. It will provide better, more costly performance and may actually last even less...

I'm spent...:o

Your're smelling the what they coated the rotors with at the factory (oils, etc) so that they stay nice and shiny when you open the box up; it will go away in a day or two of driving, quite normal.

In fact, the "apply the brakes repeatedly" portion of bedding the pads is partially to remove all the crap on the rotors themselves. You may even see them smoking as the oil vaporizes.

you seem to know quite a bit about rotors. last night was when i noticed the shine had faded a little bit, and it was at that time I was experiencing that smell....so this smell is totally normal???

BTW, after the rotors were installed, the pedal felt very tight, and the brakes were quite responsive.

My brakes today are still quite responsive, however I have a little bit play on the pedal, and I find I have to push like slightly more to get a brake reaction (but nothing I'm worried about). Do brakes tend to loosen up a bit after driving them like 100 km's? The brakes feel exactly the same way they did before I had the rotors replaced, however this pair doesn't possess a pulsation problem...

the smell was prob the machine oil residue on the rotor being cooked off.
