Can we mention 'car polish' in the "wax" discussion? You're better off looking at Off-Topic > Wash & Wax since this topic has been beaten to death. I'm going to tell you what I use before this thead gets closed.
1) Wash with dish soap (Dawn is very basic so it strips any grease you may have on the car)
2) Clay bar car -- soapy water works just fine
3) Rewash car with dish soap
4) ZAINO -- thin layer of Z1 (don't buff off), then add a thin layer Z2 on top (just to produce a slight haze on the surface)
5) Buff off Z2 with a large terry cloth bath towel (has to be 100% cotton ... use the zainobros.com website to find out brands that are truly 100% cotton)
After a few layers of Z2 ... your car will 'glow' at night ... this is my car with about 3 layers of the good stuff after claying:
