Battle of the Esses?

Acura Type S vs. new Jaguar S Type "R"

Yeah, I know, apples vs. oranges, but I wanted to be on-topic. New Jag will have 392HP supercharged 4.2l V8 and handling upgrades. Looks very sweet. Mucho torquo. Just announced at LA Show and will available in May. I am seriously thinking about it. Sort of an iron fist in a velvet glove.

"The car has become the carapace, the protective and aggressive shell, of urban and suburban man."

Marshall McLuhan (1911–80)

Does Jaguar still have the maintenance issues of yesteryear? I drove an "E' Type years ago (actually I parked an "E" Type most of the time; driving was a rare event, when I could get it moving).

Spoke with a Jag salesman at a recent show, was looking at one of the new Jags. He indicated they still have the same old maintenance problems.

Was at a coffee house when a lady pulled in one of the new Jag's, someone complimented her on the car and she launched in to a story of how it has spent more time in the shops than in her garage...

That's unfortunate because Jag really knows how to make a beautiful looking car.

I wouldn't think maintenance issues are as big now for Jag as it was 15 years ago. Now that Ford holds a lot of Jag stock and practically owns them, Jaguar now has money to R & D and make their cars, um, reliable. Now that the X and S type uses Ford underpinnings, it's now somewhat reliable. Or is that an oxymoron?

Well, the Jag could be high maintenance, just like being married to Madonna. But I for one AM MAN ENOUGH TO TAKE IT ON! Who's with me? Woo's against me?

Oh, I agree RR, very nice... how about madonna in a Jag? Can I borrow your towel, i just hit a waterbuffalo....

Regarding the Ford take over, that was why the question was asked to see if they had improved, not yet, the salesman said he didn't even want to sit in one because he didn't want to be tempted to buy it and have to deal with the problems.

Jaguar S Type R

I looked very seriously at the X-Type before buying my TLS. Almost waiting till they got them in the Jaguar Stealerships before finally buying the TLS. When I finally went to look at them, I was impressed by the design, but the quality wasn't there even in the showroom! The car on the showroom floor had two or three interior pieces broken. Ash tray door, chrome around cup holder, and such. then I checked out the engine compartment and when I shut the hood, the grill shook so violently that I thought it was going to fall off!

Now I realize I'm going to get those guys that have similar issues with their Acura's from the other threads going here, but I think the Acura is far and away a better put together car. I'd stay with your acura.

And this is coming from a long time Ford man. I still have my 1998 Expedition with 150k on it! Love it. Love the look of the Jag, but not the fit and finish!

I know people with Jags of many vintages who swear that once you get past the start-up factory shoddiness, the cars are basically bery well-engineered, and run great from 50k on.

I don't have any experience with the new (Ford) Jags, but it's hard to imagine them being a bigger PITA than one like my departed 72 XJ6. Those Stromberg carbs and Lucas electronics were nightmares. When it was right, though, it was a beautiful thing. The dual gas tanks were way cool, too, as long as both fuel pumps were working.

I'm agin it!

Why would you pay that much money for a British gas guzzler with a questionable reliability history, even if it's backed by Ford? I recently rode in a fairly new convertible Jag something or other, and when he tromped on it, I felt like I was in a fast Buick. Not too exciting.

I wouldn't buy a Peugot either. There!

Jags

Its very clear that everyone has their own preferences that drive their decisions. I can say that I decided not to buy the Jag, due to reliability, quality and performance, but a car is a personal preference to someone else reliability isn't as important as prestige or style.

I guess what I'm saying is to each their own...

Cat Fight!

Yeah, I have to agree with you guys - this must have been a temporary lapse of lucidity on my part (lust). I'd rather have a C32 anyway.

And now for something completely different. I am crusin home, 80 mph one-hand, kind of dreamin, when I see a small SUV (cute ute) with a cover on its spare tire that says Great Viagra! I say WTF? I look again - it is a Grand Vitara. You can tell where my mind was.

BTW, my favorite car was the Daihatsu Charade - what a name - it was honest - a car pretendinjg to be a real car!

Yeah, I've heard that those little blue pills can affect your vision.
