Back from the Dealership... questions on CV Boots and Oil Pan costs.. Houston ziners?

Went in for an oil change today for my 1999 TL and during the inspection, they told me I needed to replace my right Inner and Outer CV boots due to tearing and my oil pan is leaking.

1) They are asking for 394.00 + Tax to replace the CV boots.
2) The are asking 363.00 + Tax to fix the oil pan.

Can all this be done cheaper and how much should it run at a independent honda/acura repair shop? Is this a good deal?

Any places in Houston that someone can point me towards?

The also wanted to charge me 120.00 for replacing the Cabin Air filter, I just lol'd and said I was doing that on my own.

Thanks

The cost theyre quoting for the cabin air filters alone should tell you theyre way overpriced..lol. I would think a reputable independent repair shop should do you much better. Im not from Houston so I cant help you there-but I would think an area of that size would have plenty to choose from.

when the boots tear, all the grease leaks out.... and grit gets in- destroys the bearings~
Must replace the axle assembly with its 2 cv bearing- last year they were $75 per side of the car at napa- for new ones
Should take a private shop an hour or less to replace the axle

The oil pan is more work, but the same shop can do it
You may be able to fix minor pan damage with JBWeld or similar product and save!

Look in the real phone book for a shop with honda/acura listed as specialty

Yeah i planned to fsttyms1

Also, after the oil change at the dealership, my AC was not as cold as when I brought it in. I would know since I use it everyday and now it's not cold even when I put it at 60 degrees.

maybe you took a rock to the ac condensor (radiator) in the front of the car
or a seal ring went bad or connection is bad somewhere

The dealer does not go around damaging cars to make work~
If they noticed it- they report to the manager so approval for repairs can be obtained

Depending on the outside temp can effect how cold you get from the vents

Check the pressures high and low side of ac to determine problem
Its not unusual to need a slight top off of freon - if you dont use the ac much or very often- the o-rings dry up and leak

unless they let freon out there is Nothing they could have done during the oil change that would make it not as cool.

yes- thats it exactly kris- they are sending the shop kid out on the lot to release a HAZMAT into the air!!
Especially 10 year old cars where there is no warranty!!!!

Never mind the shop has to use a special machine to capture all the old freon in a system---
sure!!!!- lets go release some freon~ I dont need a mask for that~

Global Warming- ptttt Opening new shipping channels to russia is whats thats about~

Agreed, but I just got the car recently and figured why not get it checked up at the dealership as well and since they had a deal for oil changes at 19.99 with inspection I figured why not. This is what they came up with in the inspection and I just wanted to ask about it.

Thanks for the advice though, i'm gonna check out a Honda/Acura specialist soon.

ok - welcome to the acura family then!
you got a coupon deal with inspection, and they found a common and dangerous failure of the cv boots

ASAP on finding a local shop and fix replace the cv assembly
On the oil pan- is there a crack or what? many people have used jb-weld for a repair on the oil pan with great success
yes you should replace the pan- but you need to drive now....
repair may outlast the car at this point!

Thanks for the info. As of now, all I am registered in is acura owner's link website so I will call that number and find out. Looks like I'm out to do the CV boots ASAP and as of now, I'll see what my options are with the oil pan. If I don't replace it immediately, will I have to do oil changes more frequently then 3000 miles?

Thanks alot
