Axlebacks without Resonator...losing power?

I finally picked up my magnaflow axle backs, and I head to a shop to have them installed, and guy at the muffler shop proceeds to tell me it's $200 to have the 2 mufflers installed and that I will "Lose low end torque without a baffled resonator because these mufflers are a straight through design." He then continues to basically try to convince me to go with a full custom catback instead. I proceed to play along just to hear his pitch and hear the final price for some custom piping and the guy basically quotes me the price for the Magnaflow catback system $1100, with huge quad tips.

Without laughing I got in my car and drove away. It was late and I had to hit the gym so I didn't get them installed as yet.

I know he obviously he was trying to upsell me, but is there any truth to the baffled resonator comment? If I slap the axlebacks on without one will I be losing torque/power? Anyone have axlebacks on without one, have you noticed any difference?

Thanks.

call or PM Josh at Excelerate- he sells those and knows about any performance issues

there will be a change but how much I cant say- call the expert

did the muffler guy mention the need for a spacer on the O2 sensor with a free flowing system?

He said nothing about the 02 sensor, just a whole lot to convince me that I'd basically be driving a "Car with no balls", if I don't add a baffled resonator when I install my axlebacks.

I always thought that the resonator was strictly for sound?

i think he is full of BS, from what iv heard our cars do not loose power from running an axleback with no resonator. fsttyms1 ran a similar set up, correct? with no problems.

He is full of shit. The resonator is there only for sound. You wont loose power from it. Our exhaust system is already very free flowing for our motor. IF there were to be a loss from a exhaust system upgrade it would only be down low from lower back pressure but you would never see it and the gains up top would cancel out any loss. (tell me the last time you could feel 5hp)

When i had a setup like that i had no mid muffler or resonator and never lost a thing that was noticeable but did could tell upper RPM gains.

Thanks for the feed back guys.

I figured as much, which is why I sat on it. Still going to do the axlebacks, just going to a different shop. Can't wait to get rid of the ugly oem cans I have back there....and get a nice throaty exhaust note....hopefully not to loud

I can feel 5 hp!!
every time I start the mower and follow it around the yard-
got to love front wheel drive lawn mowers!

if you go to a free flow cat- you will need the o2 spacer, fancy one from excelerate or homemade with a spark plug `anti fouler` cover

Even you go with custom full cat back Magnaflow exhaust and included resonator shouldn't cost more than $550. Unless, all stainless steel and polished mufflers.

The catback system he showed me was all stainless, I'm pretty sure it was the same piping from the kit you can buy directly from Magnaflow, but he changed the mufflers to some huge quad tip deal.

Regardless I wasn't biting on that seeing as I've already purchased the 2 mufflers.

@01tl4L
I have a brand new cat on already, it doesn't really make sense for me to change it now.

that would depend on your intent- a stock cat or a hi flow model to match your rear system,,,

I know your torque can suffer a bit if you open the exhaust all the way. Ever blow the pipe off at the cat on the road? Major lag. As you have left the factory cat in place and stock diameter piping you probably wont notice much. Besides with the new mufflers your going to be flooring it more I bet...
