Austin, TX - guys with TL-S..please help

Hey, this is a shout out to all Austin TL-S drivers out there. I need to ask a few questions, paticularly to the peeps who go to U.T., live near campus, and don't drive long distances (like you would in Houston or Dallas, since both of these citites are bigger than Austin). I live near campus, and I don't drive very far most days; most of the time, I hit up starbucks on 24th and stuff around campus. I've noticed that my gas mileage really sux...I'm talking 14 or so MPG...to me, this is unacceptable. What the heck is going on? Is it short distance driving or just the hilly nature of Austin that is killing the gas mileage? In H-Town, I get like 24-25 MPG. Any one here got any idea why this is happening? Also, going down Red River, Dean Keaton, and other hilly streets, my TL-S is acting funny....I feel like the transmission is having problems figuring out what gear to stay in....this usually happens around 30-35 MPH....if I haul ass then I don't seem to notice anything wrong. I usually drive in regular automatic mode. Is this because of the hilly nature of the streets or is my tranny about to puke? I've been reading alot about the tranny problem and I am starting to get paranoid....my type s was built in Feb. 2003 and I have put about 7900 on her. Any ideas?

If you find that the transmission downshifts as you are coming to a stop (on a hill) then it is the logic of the transmission. It can be a bit strange because it acts as a brake and makes it feel like you are slightly overbraking, but it is completely normal.

And as for the mileage, you said it yourself: stop and go, hills, etc., are all mileage killers.
