Why would anyone do that? I don't think anyone here has done that b/c it could only have a negative outcome. Basically you would experience both things you typed.... performance loss and pings. The manual actually tells you this....

I have tried the 89, I didnt have any pings, but I had a slight loss of performance, and not as geat MPG. The manual says that you can use 89 and expect reduced performance.
We shouldnt get pings at 89 or 92/3 we have knock sensors, and thats why we have less performance using 89.

Interesting note, Back in Oct, C/D did a thing about gas, octane, and testing various cars with the different octanes. They noted a curious anomoly, on the V6 accord, when they used higher octane from 87, the car exhibited less power and performance. On other autos, usiung higher octane DIDNT result in more performance, but not less either. It was the Accord that showed this curiosity.

If your mileage decreases, then what's the point of using lower octane fuel? Sure you pay less at fill-up, but you'll have to fill up sooner.

Right, thats why I use 93. I just wanted to see what how it runs on 89.
However, you have to keep in mind that the lower the octane, the easier the gas ignites. Here in IL, if we have a strong cold snap, using 89 in the cold winter can help you start easier.

When I had my 98 V6 Accord, I would routinely use 87 in the winter and 89 in the summer, to have easier starts in the winter, and reduced detonation in the summer.

i'm not saying the car doesn't need it but you guys do know it's somewhat prestigious to say the car needs 91+ in the manual

Thumbs down

Anything less than the premium gas makes my TL-S knock, but with the poor gas in California, what choice do I have? The cheapest I have seen in San Diego is $1.75/gl and going up DAILY!

I only noticed it when starting out from a stop or low RPM and then accelerating.

Here in Denver the gas stations only have 85,87,91. It is very rare to see agas station with 93 octane. It is because of the high altitude (5,280 Ft.)

LOL, how the h*ll do you get up to the speed limit. It must take you about 4 miles to get up to highway speeds at 2k!

ahh grasshopper....see the key is to put it in SS, accel slowly, it'll shift at 1800 rpms, or 2000, if your pressing the gas to hard then your accel too fast, well once the car shifts to 2nd you shift right away to third, your speedodo should still be at the that fat white line, then you ride 3rd to about 19mph, then go to 4th, then ride it till 35mph (45mph if your a tough guy), (up to this point you should have vans and trucks passin you, i mean if there is a car behind you he should've switched lanes and should be trying to pass you) then at 35 mph or 45, shift to 5th n cruise on (this is when you car starts flyin, that one truck who just switched lanes to pass you is nexted to you by now, but little do they know your in 5th gear n you pullin fast ...this while always under 2k rpms then i keep accel. 2k rpms at fifth should take you to 80mph, n by now i'm passin everybody do just past me...did i mention i don't like to press the brakes, see i'm very conservative, money, gas, brakes... but that's another story, but a couple days ago i almost hit a car, he was turnin real slow i thought he would've been turned n gone by then but nah, i almost beat that man's a$$

Our engines run 10.5:1 compression. IMO, anything over 10:1 should ALWAYS use premium. The knock sensors are pretty good these days, but they will not completely eliminate pre-ignition.

Don't cheap out here. If you can't afford the gas, trade down (or quit doing mods).

I suggest to you all that you read this thread:

http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...ghlight=octane

Basically, the cars computer will retard the timing to compensate for lower octane, thus eliminating pings in the engine. So use WHATEVER octane you want...

So if it retards the timing that's why we get lower performance??? It all makes cents (.00) now!!! This helps a lot! So if we use racing gas it will advance our timing and we won't have to buy Cam Gears!!! Yeaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!
