I think top speed is 149. I hit 140 before and it still wanted to go faster.

I seem to remember 152 or there about. That speed is ECU governed to coincide with the speed rating of the tires. I have heard of people getting slightly faster speeds going downhill and with a tailwind.

The TL and TL-S have the same top speed. Power doesn't matter at high speed. I believe it has to do with the drag coefficient.

Personally, I have gone up to 147 mph in my 99 TL and it was still pulling.

POWER DOES MATTER AT THAT SPEED, so if a ferrari had the same drag c.o. even though it had 150+ hp it would only go the same speed as our tl if it had the same drag c.o?

The drag has a LOT to do with it (drag coefficient and frontal area), but of course, power still matters. It's just that HP requirements increase exponentially as speed increases.

I'd bet the TL-S is a couple mph faster than the TL. I'd bet that the G35 is faster than the TL-S (never mind the limiter), due to it's better aerodynamics. 0.26 for the G35, what is the TL?

EDIT- found it. 0.28 for the TL.

Exactly.... I always thought that Horsepower = Speed (Minus gearing ratios and other "minor" variables) Torque = Quickness (all weights being equal)... So I would assume that if nothing is ecu governed a TL type S is not only faster, it will get there quicker than a TL.

From what I have heard..........

from friends that own performance shops..... top goverened speed set at the factory for the US market (for all cars) is 150 MPH (with an error rate of +/- 5 MPH). However, anyone that has the ability to re-program an ECU can set your top speed up higher.

Having been to the far side of 170mph in a stock vehicle, I can tell you that's not true for all US cars.

Downhill with a tail wind ??
(or do you have a performance chip that overides factory ECU
settings.)

...and how old was the car ?? (I think the speed limiters are for the newer ones only...liability issues)

Can someone verify this ???

Zee-OH-Six. It wasn't too hard to get there. Standard Corvette will get there, too, so I hear.

I do know that a lot of fast sedan-type cars tend to have limiters set at 155mph. Not sure of the significance of that.
Other speed limiters are based on tire ratings. But, I don't know of any government mandate.

the governor limits are set based on the tires the car is sold with. our tires are rated to 149mph, so our car will not go faster than that. the people who've gone 155 in a TL/TLS are seeing the +/- play of the speedo reading. i've hit the limiter more than once and the speedo showed just over 150. couple of weeks ago i was driving from vegas to grand canyon, and took a monte carlo as a rental, figuring that it'd be a nice comfy ride all the way... i was shocked to find out that its limited to 110mph, cuts off the gas after that. it did save my ass though, cuz when the officer pulled me over i was 'only' clocked doing 109mph vs the 150 i couldve been doing in my TLS.

What Zodiak said

The TL-S is limited to 149.... the TL is a little lower... don't remember off hand.. but it's due to several factors... drag, HP, and tires.

Speedometers are off a certain % (usually 2-4%). The faster you go.. the more error there is. At 149mph your speedo could be reading 152+ mph.... but you're not going that fast....
