Question Anyone had their squeaky sunroof fixed?

I had my squeaky sunroof fixed yesterday by installing the tape around the lip of the sunroof.

Who else has had this done and did it last?

Service told me if that doesn' t fix it then they will replace the entire sunroof and rubber gasket. Has anyone had that done?

Just had mine done and all they did was lubricate the gasket, and alledgedly adjusted the shims. No more rattles though. Had the same problem with my 1998 Accord. Same fix. Why cant Honda/Acura get this right from the factory, four years later, or do they need to give you a tube of lubricant, when you buy the car. I wondr, do other MFGs have this problem. I never had this problem with my 1992 Accord. Hmmm, thats right, it was built in Japan.

They need to put teflon tape on the metal parts to prevent the rubber seal from squeaking to fix it permanently. Lubricating the area will only last until the next rainstorm.

Well, they did just that. A small strip of teflon tape around the metal inside edge of the sunroof and it works like a charm. Very pleased with the service I received. Got the free car wash and was looking at the burlwood shift knob and asked the GM to give it to me at cost. He did but I wasnt sure if I wanted to twist the old one off as I have tried before (not full force) and it didnt move. I didnt want to snap the metal shift rod off(yes, I know my own strength). Anybody put one of these on before....?

I haven't ever twisted that knob off but I do know that it's put on afwully tight. You have to use a lot of force to get that sucker off.

Pu$$y, just give it a twist, mine came right off.
But remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey, so turn it counter-clockwise!

I'm heading in tomorrow for that and a rattle in the sub grille that happens whenever I play "ethnic" music. I will let you know how it turns out.

Daryl -- I replaced my shift knob and felt the same as you. Just keep turning it counter-clockwise and it'll come free.

I thought the same damn thing. My 98 Accord had this problem as well. What's strange is that not all TLs do it. I have a friend who has a 2000 TL and a 2002 TLS and neither of his have that problem. When I push down on the top of my sunroof, it's like it's on springs. When I push down on the sunroof of my friend's TLS, it doesn't move at all and doesn't squeak.

Mine is fine now with the tape. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

help me understand "metal inside edge of the sunroof" and are you talking about the white teflon tape you use on the threads of a gasoline line?

thanks

The tape is installed on the inner edge of the sunroof cutout where the sunroof's rubber gasket touches the metal of the car's body.

The tape is plasticized so it's quite a bit thicker than teflon pipe tape.

I had the infamous tape installed and it did knock out the sr squeaks, while the sr door cover is closed. However, when the sr cover is open (moonroof mode), it still rattles and sqeaks. Is the tape supposed to eliminate that too or am I just supposed to live w/that rattle?

Please advise

Just to differentiate the sounds, my 00TL sunroof produces rattling type sounds when going over even small imperfections on road. Sounds more like two solid surfaces vibrating together to cause these annoying rattles. Doesn't "squeak" but rattles. Did you guys have this rattling sound, and if yes, how did the dealer fix it for you? With the same tape job? When pressing down or up on the glass, it feels very solid, nothing obviously loose. I'll have to check if there are any hinges, screws, to tighten perhaps.

Yep, hooked, that's exactly what it's like. Because when I push down on the SR cover, it is very solid also. But there should be a "fix". Our Infiniti never rattled when the SR cover was pushed back.....if Infiniti can design it so, so can Acura!
