Anyone with A/C issues?

The weather here in Raleigh has been hovering around 100 degrees these past few days. It seems that our 2002 TLS is not capable of cooling down the interior for about 10 minutes after sitting in the sun all day. I don't remember it being this way last summer.

I started it in the garage last night and couldn't get vent temps below 62-65 degrees. Most cars, even with 134A, should be in the 40's, right?

Has anyone had a similar problem? How was it resolved?

I have an appointment with the dealer on Wednesday but wanted to get an idea of what other folks have seen.

Aside: My Helm manual is due today.

I live in California, and the temp doesn't go upto 100 but we have our hot days 80-90. I have parchment interior and tinted windows. After a day of parking in the lot...it get hot up in there, the leather doesn't help. Start my car, roll down the windows, blast the A/C...the temp doesn't start going down for aleast 3 mins. and the difference is minimal. After driving for about 10-15 mins then the temp goes down...but not anywhere around 60 degrees. My moms 99 TL does this also...so i don't know if this is a problem or if it's normal. But the A/C systems sucks!! My girlfriends 92 SC400 A/C system is so much better then the TLs. Her car is not tinted...sits outside the entire day...the leather is BURNING HOT...but after 3 min the car is cooler then my TL with is on A/C for 15 mins. The temp in the SC400 drops way below the TLs. Tell me what happens when you goto the dealers

Yes, my 2002 TLS has similar issue. Mine has black
interior. In California, when the car is sitting under
sunlight for long time (about 80-85), it takes 15+
min to cool the whole car down. If in the Auto mode,
it keeps recycling air continously for 15+ min.

My 98 Accord has tan interior and better AC, it cools down much
faster than TLS.

I have black interior and I don't really notice the problem. After sitting under the sun the whole day, I would start the engine, roll down the windows and drive off. After about a minute, I would turn on the Full Auto A/C mode and the car would be cool within a couple of minutes.

What is 134A?

I just traded my 99 TL-Navi and it easily had the 2nd coldest A/C I've ever owned after my 1984 VW Rabbit. It always got cool in the car within a few minutes, with no tint and full auto.

So far no cooling problems on the 2003 TLS-Navi.

R134a is the ozone-friendly replacement for R-12 (what we used in the 70's & 80's. It's the refigerant in your A/C system.

It has less cooling capacity than R-12.

My TL-S A/C is the best of any car I've owned. Strangely enough, it cools down the car (with black interior) quicker than the A/C in my 2000 TL (parchment interior) did.

I'll test the vent temps one day when it stops raining.

I also think the TL-S AC system is excellent. Mine cools down very quickly. I have WDP, with parchment interior, and heat-reflective tint (no dye added). AND, I use a fitted, reflective sun-shade. I'm sure all that makes the difference.

I live in FL- no sense going against the grain.

White + Parchment = cool no matter how hot it gets
However, I have yet to find an air conditioners with 134 that can even come close to my parents 84 Monte Carlo. Their newer Cadillac doesn't, nor does my TL. The old systems feel at least 10 Deg cooler, maybe more. Of course that's subjective, but it is COLD. You don't really notice it until you get into a car whose air conditioner really works because everyone is in the same boat. The sacrifice we make for the environment.

My service manual showed up friday and I checked the vent temps again per the manual's instructions.

At 86 degrees, 50% humidity and in the shade I now saw 58-59 degree temps when I followed the procedure specified. Spec is 59 degrees. My car is exactly where it should be per Acura.

It must be my imagination. I'm still going to have the Acura techs look at the sun and temp sensors in the dash as long as they don't have to gut the dash to get at them.

BTW, car is WDP/Parchment.

Now I do not live where its hot all the time, but it sure gets hot here during the summer months. My 1998 Accord EXV6 and 2002 TL has excellent A/C systems. I think they are identical. BTW, my worst A/C and only problem with the car was with my 1992 Accord EX. This had the old type coolant, and I had to have it charged every 2 years. The present cars I have never had a problem with the A/C. I attribute this to the fact the systems are automatic and as such, no need to screw around with the A/C in the winter, like you had to do with the 1992, that is, you had to remember to put on the A/C to run the compressor, to keep the seals lubricated. The auto systems run it automatically, all year long.
