hermants (his name I beleive) put a 245-45-17 on the stock 17x6.5 inch wheel. But...just because some1 else did it doesn't mean it's recommended.

Several people I know of are running 234/45/17s on here. One is running 245/45/17s but I don't think that would be too safe (I could be wrong). My several months of research has allowed me to conclude that 235/45/17s should be okay on our TLS rims and this size also preserves the speedo accuracy the best.

You can do it but it may be manufacuter specific.

ie. the TLS wheel is 6.5 inches wide. If the manufacturer recommends 7 inches you are going to be 1/2 inch out of spec which is no big deal. If the manufacturer recommends 8 inches then I'd say choose another tire.

There is no safety issue. What happens when you go wider than spec is:

1. the contact patch is slightly narrower than spec
2. the flex point of the sidewall moves from the centre to closer to the shoulder
3. because of 2. there may be more heat buildup so I would only do this with a speed rated tire that is designed to dissipate heat
4. also because of 2. the sidewall stiffness is somewhat less; yet another reason to go with a z rated tire

I had 245/45/17 firehawk sz50 on stock wheels and rode them for about 30,000km without issue. The car felt way more stable and torque steer was reduced. In hard cornering, however, you could notice that the sidewalls were slightly soft (still stiffer than stock MXM4's, but not as stiff as 215/50/17's of the same tire)

Hope this helps.

The 235/45/17 is what I've been running with good results.

hemants
Did you not have any rubbing issues? I would like to go with the same setup as you and how was it when you had rear seat passengers? Were these tires on your car with the Comptech suspension? I will be having to replace my current tires within the next 2 months and it would be great to go to a larger size.

I never had the Comptech's with these tires. But if your 235's fit, I doubt you'd have rubbing issues on 245's.

It's a long story but the 245's I got at a very special price. I developed an impact bubble and they couldn't replace them so I had to compromise with the tire dealer and get 215/50/17 SP9000's. Too bad, I kinda miss the look.
