Staight from American Honda, the tranny problem is most noticed on car that sustain long high speed trips ie. freeway driving
This was noted on the massive recall on the other Honda cars that use the same tranny as ours and are also losing the 3rd gear, but "our problem is differant" YA RIGHT!!!!
Oh ya my car should be back to me this Friday w/ tranny #5 in it, and ya i drive atleast 600 freeway miles a week. And for the na sayers out there who have never had a problem w/ their low mileage TL's and are sayin "you must be racing it if you have tranny probs" ponder this cuizin speed for me is about 70-80mph (thats nothin in so cal even bumper-to-bumper) A race starting from thoughs speed would quickly take me to triple digits where, if caught is an arrestable offence. How often do you think I could get away with that?

My TL doesn't have low mileage and almost 80% of the mileage it does have is highway mileage. I'm still waiting for my first tranny to go out so I can have one of those rumored "newly redesigned" and bulletproof Honda trannies. Also, I use SS 85% of the time or more. If anything, I think tranny failures probably occur more in cars that are driven in D5 almost all the time.

I have no doubts that you have problems with your tranny without you actually driving abnormally... However, more than likely your transmission problems are a result of numerous up/downshifts into 3rd gear from bumper to bumper traffic rather than from cruising at highway speeds ... Think about it, if you're driving at a constant speed then your transmission isn't shifting at all, and you're probably not putting any strain on the 3rd gear at a constant 70-80mph which would put you in 5th gear not 3rd gear unless you're holding 3rd gear with SS.
Read the report to NHSTA that I linked in the thread I linked to above and see what Acura themselves found out about the tranny problem on our actual cars. It should shed some light on the problem.

Tranny
I just got a '00 TL with 68K miles. Is there any possible way of finding out if the tranny has been replaced on it already? Or would a mechanic be able to tell me?

It does not have anything to do with sport shift... jst a matter of time until the 3rd gear clutch wears out.
