Another freaken engine problem (won't drive the car)
Hi All,
I'm fed up with my piece of crap. I started the car today and the engine rises up to 1800 rpms (which it never usually went to) then drops like I shut it off to 1200 rpms, then rises back up to 1800, then drops to 1200 etc. It does this once every 1.5-2 seconds and it keeps doing it. Has anyone ever experienced this before? What can I do? I'm about to say fk it and drive the thing as is.
Cheers,
Rosh

I feel sooooo repetitive saying this, but it's most likely your idle air control valve.
IACV uses thermo-wax to control the amount of air coming in while the car is idling, and if the wax has disintegrated overtime, or if the unit is simply malfunctioning for whatever reason, then your idle RPM will be shooting everywhere.
Take it in, and hopefully they won't rape you on the charges. If you're mechanically inclined, pick up the part and have a tackle at it.
Good luck.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your help. Is there anyway I can visually check if the IACV is bad? Where is it located? How much does this part cost? I would prefer to do it at home because I always walk out of the dealer with a high BP after I pay my bill. The last time I went to the dealer, I complained that my car was stalling. They blamed it on the battery and charged me 80 bucks for the diagnosis, 80 for the battery and 40 for the install!!!
BTW, I cleaned my TB about a month ago. I was thinking that this had something to do with the problem because a car sounds like it's choking when you spray that stuff into the engine.

This happened to me yesterday as well. I also have a 99tl. Check your coolant level. The coolant level in the rad. was fine but in the reser. it was low. When I added the coolant the problem went away. We always think when we have a problem that it's going to be something major, sometimes it something simple. Good luck!
