Question AEM air intake question

I am thinking of buying a AEM cold air intake. I heard it was very good for our cars. Can somebody tell me what the optional air by-pass valve is for and is it easy to install the whole thing yourself?

you is a noob...do a search but long story short...the bypass valve is a secondary filter mid-pipe...when the main filter gets water clogged intake air comes from the bypass valve effectively preventing water from getting into your motor.

Ha ha you tell him to go look then tell him something totally wrong The bypass valve is in no way a filter...it's just a valve. A valve that opens when water gets sucked up the intake pipe and creates negative pressure.

Oh and by the way, I really suggest you get it...it's like $30 most places...$40 from Tim, is easy to install, looks good, and gives you peace of mind...

it is a secondary filter...once the main filter element gets wet negative pressure the bypass valve shuts downs main filter induction, air gets in through the foam element "filter"...you don't want to suck in straight air do you?

Although it's really not a big deal...I was told by AEM that the added foam surround was a mechanical issue. Previously, they didn't have the foam surround, and there was a problem with the bypass valve opening prematurely. I was told by an AEM guy that the second gen of the bypass valve included that for that reason.

if i remember correctly, the first gen also had the foam surround...it was the rubber gasket that the foam attached to that was the cause of the suck-in and the subsequent failure of the bypass valve.

the foam is the only filter element in the bypass valve...the bypass itself was not the foam but the whole point of the bypass valve was a secondary source of air when water clogs teh main filter...it can't just suck in air from the engine bay without filtration
