Post Adding navi to non-navi TL

I saw Snook's pictures of his pop-out video screen, and wondered what would be involved in putting an aftermarket Alpine navi and a pop-out screen in my car. Would you have touch-screen access to the functions, and if not would you use a remote? Anyone done this???

You know...I thought about it but, even after consideration of having to get all required parts: The Alpine Navi system $1200.00 + The Pioneer (or other brand) Screen + Control System $700.00+, and even adding installation + other required parts you actually pay more for going aftermarket Navi than factory flush. But the best part is when you park your car and no one knows what lies beneath! Or how about those freaks that walk down the street looking at TL's and going "That one has nav, ohh that one doesn't...." you get the picture...You can fool them all Either that or impress everyone you give a ride to by going hey press this button! Good Luck...cause I'm think about doing the same thing too!

I did it! It is great but a bit pricey. If you like the new look of the TL or TL-S, trade it in for all the extra goodies. I would of lost 3k on the trade in and paid around 4k for the TL-S. So i used the 7k to get my Alpine multimedia system. Its only an alternative but i still think the flush mount monitor that comes with the car looks better. It is cool to see it slide out and tilt upwards but I'm just afraid of electronics in a few years. It is not touch screen though. Check my sig. of what i added. Hope this helps.

Aftermarket nav would be nice 'cause I could take it with me whenever I buy a new car that doesn't have nav. However, it would probably cost about the same or less to do a "lateral" trade to a TL with nav. By lateral, I mean trading my '01 with 17,000 miles for another '01 or '00 with similar mielage but having nav.

Since there is really no difference b/t '00 and '01, I imagine that with the same mielage an '00 would cost a little less due to one year less on warranty. Since I drive so much, I'm likely to hit 50,000 before 4 years old so it wouldn't be any different to me. Plus, I could get a different color and it would be like having a "new" car all over again. Hmm, sounds worth investigating - I'll let y'all know!

Thumbs up

Here's an interesting solution, and I'd also have an iPAQ and could take the nav with me away from the car. Plus, the price is right... http://www.mobileplanet.com/product....0093&listing=1
