My insurance company is charging me an extra $300/year over what I was paying for my Grand Cherokee. They didn't mention that it was a sports car, but said this was due to a higher theft rate for Hondas/Acuras.

I don't think it's considered a "sports" car, although some insurance companies may rate it as a "luxury" car.

I believe that most insurance agencies will consider the TLS a sports car, rightfully so. Im paying around $100 a month on my 02 TLS, thats with full coverage and a few discounts.. Before I let my agent know that I had the TLS, she was under the impression that I had the TL and quoted me a monthly that was around $80.. Let them know you have the S, and watch your rates soar! All well, its worth it..

My wife had to pay only an extra $24.00 per six months (for her 2002 TL Type s) compared to her 1997 CL through GEICO.

I pay about $100/yr. more for my TLS than for my '00 TL. Agent said it had more to do with it being a more expensive car than it being a sportscar, i.e. the driveout price was about $6000 more than my previous TL.

I only pay about $80 per year more for my 2002 TL-S than I was for my 1998 Maxima SE - with better coverage for the TL-S due to the higher dollar value of the purchase. As a matter of fact, my TL-S costs less to insure per year than my wife's 1999 Expedition Eddie Bauer, which cost me $37,000 in '99!

All in all, I'm thrilled with the insurance rates. My agent told me that to get a 2002 Maxima SE would have cost me $300 per year more than the TL-S. Looks like I made the right choice of car.........

My State Farm agent quoted me $475/6 mo. for the TL-S. AND he's taking $50/6 mo. off my Ford Exlporer. I was very pleased. Another agent quoted me close to $600/6 mo. I think the TL-S is simply a near-luxury sedan.

Damn I envy you guys. Geico is charging me 1,100 for 6 months, and they're not even aware that it's a type-S. (Just for the record...I'm 24)

No change in my rates from my '99 TL which was $100 /year cheaper than my '97 Prelude. My company classifies my car as sedan. I am paying just a few bucks more than my wife who has a '99 Camry. I get "no accidents" and mature driver (old guy) discounts. I just received my policy renewal, no change. The coverage is for full replacement value for the first three years but it is $500 deductible. I live in a relatively small city but the rates are about the same as Ottawa.

I guess the 100 mile a day commute doesnt help me either. I wonder what the penalties would be if I lied and said my commute was only 5 miles each way.

I live 4 hours outside of Toronto (acutally
live across the river from Detroit, MI now)
and my rate with a C$300 deductible and
C$1.3 mil liability is C$620/6 months. (US
$1 = C$1.52)

That's pretty good considering I'm a male
barely over 25 with no accident nor tickets.

When I went to add my TL-S to my insurance policy they were unable to find the VIN in their system. The home office (Erie Insurance) gave me the next best thing, a 2001 TL. The same thing happened when I went to the license branch to put plates on my car. All they had in their books was a 2001TL, so they calculated my excise tax on the 2001TL. I hope next year it doesn’t change. My insurance rates are $680 per year. 28M, no tickets, no accidents.

I think it might change. When I first got my vehicle in March '00, my insurance company gave me "the next best thing." Today after renewal, it is corrected and up to date; and more expensive.

I kind of expected that. Hopefully it will not be that much.

The lady at the license branch said I was the first 2002. I expect my rates will be readjusted next year. My class was one above an accord v6, but not as high as a lexus GS300, or BMW 330.

You're getting screwed. Geico maintains a 5 year driving history (for you that's when you were 19). Find a different company that uses a 3 year history and chances are your rates will go down.

Progressive quoted me $1600/6 months.
Geico gave me a quote of $1400/6 months.
Pemco gave me a quote of $1041/12 months.

Guess which I picked.

When I first checked rates in March, they were higher because State Farm was rating the car based on the cost of the vehicle. By the time I bought the car in mid-April, State Farm's books had been updated, and they gave me the lower quote.

I have to tell you that it varies from state to state. I work for a prominant insurance company and can assure you that the TLS is rated the same as a Grand Prix GTP and other cars with tweaked engines. It really depends on how each company rates its cars , i.e. Standard or High Performance. HP cars I've seen are Corvette's , Mustangs , Z28's and the like. Mostly V8 Sport Cars.

Keep in mind once again that city to city , state to state , the rating factors vary more than you might imagine. Huge differences !! Especially from one small town to another Big City. Single Male to Married w/children. No incidents/claims in the past 3/5 years and so on .........

Hope this helps.
Live in a small town , be married , have a perfect driving record , HAVE GREAT CREDIT and you will probably get the best rate in your town/city.

Best of luck !!

Sure...but when I looked at Pemco's website, they said this.

PEMCO is a preferred insurance company that insures careful people who:

are Washington residents
are 23 years old for PEMCO Insurance Company (educators and their families), 25 years old for PEMCO Mutual Insurance Company.

Unfortunately Im not a Washington resident.

That makes sense. But get this, I purchased my 2001 CL-S in March 2000. The car was not in their database and they said "Are you sure this is not a 2000 CL?" Why they had a 2000 model in their database when there was no year 2000 model for the CL (only 1999 and prior), I don't know. But that's what I was initially rated.

I am a victim of rate gouging. Last year when I moved from the San Francisco area in CA to Hudson County in NJ, my insurance rates DOUBLED. And SF is not cheap by any measure. I found that Hudson County is the highest insurance county in the highest insurance state in the country!

The only consolation is when I chose the TL-S over the CL-S, I saved about $40 a month in insurance (4 door is sedan, 2 door is sport coupe).

I believe it's due to lots of people (and cars) in a really, really small area. It has been ever thus!!!

I am only paying $46 more per year for my TL-S than I was paying for my 98 GS400. Of course, I work for my insurance company and get a 15% discount!

I'm getting a great deal from AAA insurance, just under $400/6mo. for 50/100 coverage with $500 deductible.

I'm only paying $49.00 more a year than my 2001 TL. Considering the TL-S costs more it apears that there is no cost difference for me.

$793 per year vs $747

Factors are:
Area - Dallas-Metro
Age - over 40
Sex - male
Multi car and home owners discount
no children driving
less than 20 miles to work
No claims or tickets (knock on wood) :-)
$500 deductible
Agency - UniTrin

I'm using Geico, and my insurance went up about $70/ six months. I needed increased coverage because - it's a new car.

I also found out in Texas if you take a defensive driving ($25 at Fun Ed) and drug/alchol awareness course (don't know cost) you can get a discount on your insurance premium good for 3 years.

defensive driving 10%
drug/alcohol 5%

Works out to $80 /six months for me.

Cant they find out the make and model when you give em the VIN?

I just realized something. Why do people call it VIN number. Since VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number doesn't that make it Vehicle Identification Number number???? My moment of realization for the day! I guess the multi-vitamins do work.

wrong, when u give them the VIN they will know it's a type-S

and type-S is around 200 extra a year compare with the TL if it's my policy, or 10% more
