Accelerating

I have a 99 TL-P (which is the 4 speed) and I've found out that you can accelerate quicker, or it seems to anyway, when you are at a stop light and yo have the car in Drive (just regular D not sportshift) then when you accelerate all the way through first and then just as the car goes into 2nd you through it into sportshift and kick it into 2nd and accelerate till about 4000-4500rpms and then advance to 3rd. I wouldn't think this would be good for the tranny and something so bizarre probably isnt, so I only did it once to experiment. Is it ok to do this? It seems like the car gets more power and releases more torque quicker, if that makes sense. It seems like the car lags more when in auto and is accelerated up to 3rd and it doesn't seem to have the push when using sport shift the entire time you accelerate even if you go up to 4000-4500rpms. Why is this? Anyone know? Whats the best way to shift or to not shift to release the cars "near" or even full potential without blowing the tranny or the engine?

So your trying to say that if you leave it in D4 and floor it, after it shifts by itself from 1st to 2nd then shift it into SS mode. Then around 4000-4500 rpm shift into 3rd you think your car is faster and more power? Id have to say your mind is playing tricks on you. Gate shifting will yield the fastest most power from the car driven to redline just before the revlimiter

I always heard the phrase "gate shifting" but I was wondering what it actually is? And how is it done? I normally run through all of the 4 gears in SS and I'm assuming gate shifting is something else. Is it?

^ i think it may for car that have d1, d2, d3, d4 and d5 on the shifter, basically starting off in d1, then when the car reaches near redline, bump it up to d2, then to d3 and so forth. Its kinda like SS, but without the dedicated area for it and gate shifting may cause some damage.

Gate shifting won't cause any damage. You are just telling it when to shift, instead of the computer.

iono but with are transmissions i would just leave it inD3 or D4 and drive it, i think sport shifting messes up the tranny. personaly i feel that the TL is a delicate car. i seems if you drive it hard the car just cant handle it the tranny is weak and the freakin motor mounts go out so much i allready have been threw 3 and a tanny and had to replace my coilpacks. i only have 84k, im disapointed in acuras quality on this car. i think it would been better if made in Japan and not the US.

The difference between them is simply Electrical vs mechanical when it tells it to shift. Plus its much easier to actually shift accurately in SS.

SS mode does not hurt the trans. The trans is not weak. I challenge you to Find me 1 person who has had the trans break!!! We have a wear part that wears out alot faster than it should due to design.. (which is not something breaking) And for your info that trans was designed and built in japan. So so much for the car being better if it was built there
