Question About front plate in New York State

Hi all,

Does anyone know if NY State Law requires us to put our front plate at the center?

In my home country Hong Kong, we are allowed to put the front plate on the side instead of center.

Just a thought. When I moved my front plate down I tried putting it at the side...it looked awesome!

All I know is that you have to have it on the front. Found out the hard way years ago. Also, up in Albany you got those friendly Troopers. Ha !!

Just remember...your car may not be Aerodynamically correct.
The side with the plate will have more resistance when you are pushing 80+ on the freeway.

I got a ticket just the other day for no front license plate in NJ. F'ing trooper. I have to put it back on now cause if I get pulled over again they are going to most likely check to see if I put it back or not.

Thumbs up Sounds ok to me

I think as long as it is on the front of the vehicle with an unobstructed view of the information, you should be in compliance.

From the NYS DMV website:
If the DMV issues two registration plates for your vehicle, the law requires you to use both. Put one on the front of the vehicle and one on the rear of the vehicle.

The NYS Police and other law enforcement agencies recommend two registration plates for better vehicle identification. NYS makes registration plates with a reflective material for better visibility. The vehicles are easier to see, which improves highway safety.

You can receive a fine of $25 to $200 if you use one registration plate instead of two. There is also a mandatory surcharge of a maximum of $30.

Note: The DMV issues one registration plate only for some types of vehicles. These types include trailers, motorcycles, and the tractor unit of a tractor-trailer.

I agree with jl.... as long as it's mounted in the front... you're cool. Doesn't matter if it's on the side of in the middle.... just as long as it's visable from the front.

Oh and BTW... even though the website says the plates are reflective for safety... it's also for the cops.... more reflection means easier to zap you with laser
