300,000 miles!

Today was the day!. My ACURA 2000 TL reached the 300000 mile mark today. When I got home tonight, the odometer read 299999. My daughter and I drove down the street waiting for it to change. With the original engine and tranny, do I hear 400000 miles?

300,000 on original engine no problem! On original transmission very impressive. Sounds like you hit the lottery on the tranny.

400,000 go for it.

I am the original owner. Nothing profound on my part to report. I am not a "car" guy to speak of. I changed the oil every 5000 miles and did a tranny flush at 100,000 and 250,000 miles. The timing belt was done at 120,000 and 260,000 miles. Because of my work situations, I did about 80% highway driving.

I caught a break around 175,000 miles when an car wash frame fell on my car as I was driving through. I was not hurt but much of the front end fenders and hood was replaced. So I bought some life there. Otherwise, the body is in good shape.

As one poster put it, I hit the lottery with this car.

Wowsa! That is pretty amazing if you went 100k and then to 250k on the trans fluid. And if you had it flushed too. Congrats! Keep her going!

I'm at 206,000 - third tranny (on Honda's tab). I don't do anything special other than change the oil and timing belt.

My car is parked in a garage at night and I'm sure this contributes to its longevity.

200K is relatively easy for our TL's to reach if the normal suggested PM is performed.
It seems like well over half of the 2nd Gen TL's went through at least 1 or 2 trannys.

So, Greathusky has definitely beat the odds bigtime with an original tranny in his TL at 300K !!!

I hope to be getting to 300,000 miles soon. I'm currently at 256,000 miles and I also have the original tranny -- but mine is a 1999 which has the more reliable 4-speed. The exterior paint now looks noticeably worse after I kicked the car out of the garage.

Very impressive! You really hit the tranny lottery with that one. I think Acura should buy your car back when you're done with it just so they can dissect the tranmission to find out why it worked so much better than the other transmissions.

Personally, I think that HONDA already knows where the problem originated from.

They have danced around the problem for years. It was all part of their growing pains here within the states as they improvised ways to cut corners and improve their volume profitability..... all at the customer's expense.

Corporate greed gave them a black eye. They could've done better from the git-go....no doubt they had the engineering ability. But, quality control took a back seat to the market. Shoddy mass production at stateside plants done them bad !!!

It sounds like 99, 00's tranny is more reliable than tranny from 02, 03 within 2nd Gen TL. Is that right?

'99 Yeah, but newer 2000 and up model TL's went with a poorly designed new 5 speed problematic tranny.

They basically suck and that's all that can be said. But once the tranny issues are resolved, these 2nd Gen TL's are great cars for the long haul. AV6 is the ultimate lifesaver solution !!!

I'm at 305K on the chassis, and the tranny, but on my 3rd J32a2 (first lasted 292k miles, second lasted 14k miles due to bad mechanics, on the 3rd now.)

I read an analysis of the TL tranny issue (I think by NTSB, but may be remembering wrong). They said that depending on the exact orientation that some components were installed (like a bolt or pin with a fluid hole on the side, which technically could be installed with the hole pointing at any 360 degree direction) that fluid flow could be reduced by a significant amount to certain parts of the tranny. If you got "lucky" and all these parts were in the optimum orientation, you had a more reliable tranny, as opposed to someone else who got unlucky and had 50% less flow to certain parts.
