I believe 4-channel ABS has four separate, independent systems monitoring each wheel, and turning ABS on/off each wheel as they need it -- with 3-channel -- i believe the front two are independent -- so should one system fail, the left wheel for instance in the front, the back two wheels and the right wheel would still have the ABS active. With four channel, each wheel's ABS could fail, leaving the functional wheels still active w/ ABS braking.

It's a 4 x redundant system to assure you that you'll never be w/o brakes I guess. Then again, I could be misinformed about how these systems work.

You're on the right track...

A 4-sensor, 3-channel system has a wheel speed sensor for each wheel, but pairs up the braking for the rear wheels in one channel while the two front wheels remain independent. If either rear wheel locks up, it can only modulate the braking to BOTH of the rear wheels at the same time. A 4-channel system controls each wheel independently.

As far as the braking system's architecture, it's what's known as a "dual-diagonal" system in which the right front and left rear brakes share a hydraulic line, as do the left front and right rear. Should a problem occur in one of the circuits, you still have control of the car because the front and rear of the car (as well as opposing sides) are under braking force. I believe this is pretty much standard in newer cars.

Why would they go out of thei way in manufacturing to make the Canadian models 3 channel and the American models 4 channel?

All TL-s models have the 4-channel system since it is linked to the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) system....I am not sure of differences in the Canadian models....

Also, in a FWD vehicle, 3-channel or 4-channel makes little difference, if any. In an AWD vehicle, it would certainly make an impact.

You need 4-channel for VSA -
in terms of braking performance, doubt there is much improvement.
