Na dude, the cpu just cuts off gas to the engine so its like hitting a brick wall, its about the same feeling when you shift too late between 2nd and third, the rev limiter kicks in and shuts gas off to tha engine until you shift gears...Shyne

I went up to 147 mph in my 99 TL and it felt like it was still pulling (but really slowly).

No but is there an aftermarket chip that will allow the car to go faster? That won't screw everything up?

I don't think that is how it works. It does not cut off the gas.

I hit 149mph. If the ECU was to cut the gas, then you couldn't stay at that speed.

I drove for about 3-5 minutes at that speed and the neddle did not move any further.

The other questions is how acurate is the neddle at that speed??? So until someone can get a laser reading on a TL going as fast as the ECU allows then we will never know. Acura does claim 147mph, I guess that has been radar tested.

I got up to 147 mph when my TL was bone stock. It was like @ 3 am and I was racing with this new Volvo S60 on Rt. 280 in NJ. There was no traffic at all, just the two of us. My TL felt like it was still pulling but like I said before but really slowly. Haven't been close to that speed again. FYI, I beat his a$$.

Now I have an intake. Plus I will be getting headers, exhausts, RES (MM), and a few other engine mods hopefully next summer. Then I will test it out to see if I can go faster than 147 mph. Since 1999TL got up to 151 mph, I want to see if I can pass that.

You are a brave soul black...What the hell would you do if you were going that fast and you see a cop...Thats just my luck that's why im scared as a mofo to even hit a bill now...My driving record is $hit and im on probation for two years...So if I get a seatbelt ticket or speeding ticket my ass will be locked up...I dont know how much truth there is to that like what the judge said, but im on my game twenty fo' shevin (24-7) my niggaz...Shyne

i don't understand how people claim of going over 130 mph, when our cars are governed at 130, unless you had some cpu work done, just puzzled!!

I don't know what the real top speed is, but I am 100% sure there is no 130mph governor.

I believe TL's are drag limited in the US market. I myself drove [VTEC]TL's car when all he had was an intake and I was doing 120 with it and he easily pushed it to about 130. Lately he says he hit 150 (according to the speedo).

There is no way our TL is limited to 130 mph. Unless you have never driven pass 130 mph.:p

Keep in mind that your speedometers are going to be waaaaaay fast at those speeds. On the order of 10mph fast or more.

Est REAL Top Speeds:

98-02 AV6 4AT: low-130's
99 3.2TL 4AT: low-130's
00 3.2TL 5AT: high-130's
02 3.2TL-S 5AT: about 150

With mods you'll be able to push beyond those real speeds a little further but not by a whole lot

Where are you getting these numbers from because they look kind of on the low side. I am pretty sure my TL can go faster than that. If you have anything to back up those numbers please post it.

The reason those speeds seem low is because they're the estimated REAL (not speedo indicated) top speed of the car. Most guys here are posing speedo numbers, which aren't accurate and could be close to 10 mph fast at those speeds.

The Accord V6 was tested by C&D to have a real top speed of 132 mph (drag limited, no governor). I verified this in CarTest2000 simulations (a very accurate simulation tool, BTW) and it was right on. We see speedo readings of around 140mph or so for 132 mph.

The 99 3.2TL had the same 4spd auto tranny as the AV6, 25 more HP, and about 200 lb more weight. So it has about the same top speed as the 98-02 AV6 - low 130s. You'll see speedo indicated speeds of high-130's/low-140's for this.

The 00+ 3.2TL has the 5spd auto. Top speed is in 4th gear again on this one, but with the extended overdrive in 5th that allowed 4th gear to be a good bit shorter and give the car a slightly higher top speed of high-130's. You'll see speedo readings of mid-high-140's for this.

The 02 TL-S has the same gearing as the 00+ TL/CL's but a big jump in horsepower and that allows it to push to around 150 mph. You'll see speedo readings in excess of 160 probably for this...

The BEST way to test your actual top speed and avoid the speedo inaccuracy is to get yourself a GPS unit which will very accurately report your real speed and direction

I haven't seen any published top speed figures for the Acura's but if anybody has some then we can compare. I'd like some more data points to see how accurate the CarTest2000 simulation package really is. It seems pretty accurate, but i'd like to give my $40 a workout

Sigh. These "speed tests" should be done at the track.

The car is not governed at 109. Its supposed to be 149 though some have found it to be a little lazy at times and have gone further like myself where i have seen GPS verified 154.
