1999 TL roof paint oxidizing

Anyone else experience this? It's just the roof, rest of car looks great. And I keep it garaged 80% of the time.

I took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't help. They told me about a mass recall on Mitsubishi cars for bad paint.

Can I bitch to the dealer or Acura corporate for a new paint job?

Thanks!

I doubt it. Its normal where you get intense heat/salt air, especially if you dont wax your car often.

Mine is a 99 with 90K+ on the clock and I have no problems.

I highly doubt the dealer will do anything.

Thanks fellas.

Yeah, mine has 92K. Oh well, perhaps I'll take her to Maaco for a touch-up.

Try to get it wet sand first and see if that helps.

After you get it fixed, make sure you wax it to protect the paint but before doing so, let the paint cure for a month before applying any wax

Take a picture, I've resurrected some really poor paint jobs, let me se what it looks like and I can suggest something for it. I doubt your clear coat is gone, it probably is just oxidized, which can be fixed without painting..

Post pics here and we'll comment on the best steps to take. Then, like clockwork, Lawia can lock this thread complanining about how it should be posted in "Wash & Wax".

I just had my '02 NBP looked at by a good friend with a body/paint shop.
My paint is etched....probably from bird shit on the hood and trunk....it looks like white spots....some of them look like a splatter....tried it all; clay bar, polish....NEX-T wax, couldn't get them out.
My buddy said wet sanding will probably take off the clear coat and leave the whole spot whiter.
It drives me crazy....I don't want to paint the hood.

Yeah, tell me about it. I'm know next to nothing about paint. Is this down to the primer?

What steps do I need to take to make her look new again? I thought a quickie at Maaco would do the trick but a few people told me to stay away from there.

Any idea on the cost to redo the roof?

Thanks.

That can't be anything BUT defective craftsmanship. I'd bitch to Acura about it and see if they might meet you halfway with a repair. They do this sometimes.

03Coupe: sounds like a good idea. The thing that chaps my ass is the fact that the roof is the only part of the Acura that looks this bad. The rest of the paint is mint.

"insert foot (A), into mouth (B)."

I stand corrected... like Kris, I thought there was some possibility of saving the finish, but that white stuff is primer, and the grey in the center is the freakin metal from the roof...Can't polish paint that's not there!! I can't imagine what was done to cause that.. possibly the roof wasn't clearcoated at all? unlikely but it might look like that if it wasn't clearcoated.

Basically the finish layers like this.

Metal - Primer (white) - Paint - Clearcoat

You have had your finish loose all of those layers in certain places on your roof, that is unexcuseable, I would call acura... The paint has "faded" down to the bare metal on the roof, but it is still very nice everywhere else on the car.. Something was (or wasn't ) done to the roof of that car prior to painting, the paint didn't cure properly or something. That is definitely not a typical issue with our cars.. I've never seen it before on a car so "young", a 1980's junker, yes, but not a 1999+ car..come on that's only 5 years..

Keep us updated...

Sorry about that, man! Florida sun is intense. You need a pint job.

My paint is etched....probably from bird shite on the hood and trunk
I had the bird dive-bomb etched spots on my last car as well as the one before it. I also had some tree sap on my last car that left a bit of a spot. I reduced their noticeability by scraping what I could off (tree sap) with a credit card and then using some aggressive rubbing compound on the affected area. I then polished the whole car with a high speed buffer, putting extra attention and elbow grease into the trouble areas. when I was done, the car shined like the sun and, if you looked close and knew they were there, you'd see a few circles that with surface distortion. The color matched again and the area was reflective but the paint was no longer mirror flat. I hope that description makes sense...

moral of the story: clean bird shit and tree sap off immediately!

I've even cleaned bird crap off with spit on my finger and then had to drive with a nasty old finger until I could get to a sink or a wet towel... What we will do for our babies.

But a Legend, at the very minimum, has to be 11 years old.

Update: I just mailed into Acura a detailed explanation of the problem and pictures to back it up. The local dealer already stiff-armed me....no help. Figured I'd punt to corporate and see what happens. More to follow....

Headlights stolen in Metrowest Orlando

Hood, quarter panels all jacked up. Headlights completely ripped out with wires hanging out past front bumper. $3500 worth of damage.

Told the collision shop to go ahead and repaint the roof. Cost me $450. They did a great job.

Glad I moved out of Metrowest.

Later.
