1999 3.1TL Gasoline Octane

I have a 1999 3.2TL and always use premium gasoline when filling up. Today when I filled up, I had asked for premium as I always do, but when I got my receipt I saw that they filled it with regular.

Will this cause any damage to my vehicle? I read in the manual that 91 octane or greater is required or else a noise many occur which can cause mechanical damage to the engine.

If anyone could shed some additional light on this for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Nope. You can run lower octane infrequently with no long term damage (only sligght loss of power and mileage as the ECU retards the timing to compensate)

Wow, just noticed 2003 join and your first post, welcome to the forum.

Here in Oregon, it's illegal to pump your own gas , so I always watch the attendants to make sure they're putting in premium. Using lower octane rated fuel not only doesn't give you the power you expect, but trashes your fuel economy.

My wife did the same on my TL-S. She accident filled up a tank of gas with regular. So, during the tank of regular gas, the car seemed to lose a lot of power from the butt dyno but I could definately feel the different. It took about 2-3 tank premium for get the ECU adjusted back again.

As everyone said, dont worry about anything. Your car's knock sensors will compensate for the lower octance. Your only penalties will be less power, and lower mpg.
