03 TL adding navi/dvd/bluetooth
I'm not sure if this would be the correct forum or if this should go in the off-topic av forum, so please move it if necessary. I am considering purchasing a 03 TL non-NAVI and then adding some parts to it. I have been reading about DVD/NAVI players that have been installed and I have some questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1. Is it worth spending the extra money (and time b/c not that many factory navi cars are available) to get the factory Acura Nav?
2. Is it possible to get an aftermarket HU with nav and bluetooth, such that the bluetooth system would function like 3rd gen tl (number display, music cutout, etc)?
3. I read a thread that described how to keep the steering wheel volume controls, is this still accurate?
4. Which parts of the following wishlist are feasible with aftermarket parts. Obviously I would like them all.
a. Navigation
b. DVD
c. XM
d. Bluetooth
e. Input for a portable MP3 player
e.1. portable MP3 player displayed on after market head unit.
f. I drive this car for work, with clients so it needs to look professional.
I realize there are a lot of questions, but I spend an enormous amount of time in my car and all of these features could make it much better. I have a good friend who is an installer, so the work isn't an issue. I would also hopefully be able to put together a DIY if I could make this all work out.
Thank you

If you havent bought a TL yet and you want navi you are better off getting it with the options you want. Navi only adds $500 to the value of the car and doing it yourself is almost $1,000 in parts plus 10-15 hours of labor. Plus its part of the car from factory and covered under warranty.
You can wire in DVD, MP3 and XM to the factory navi and radio for about $200 but bluetooth is not going to work at all unless you spend thousands upgrading the factory system. At that point you might as well buy a car that already has bluetooth like the 3rd generation TLs or RL
Its not cost effective or as clean to add aftermarket parts. They dont add any value to the car and may actually hurt resale. If you want a fast TL get an S and if you want Navi then get the car with Navi in the first place.
Congratulations on the 86 Celebrity. Serious chick magnet

Thanks for the info. I agree with your assessment of factory parts, I just wanted to know if there was some killer after market head unit out there. Additionally, the CPO TL or TLs with NAV are somewhat hard to find.
Is there any HU that gives integrated Bluetooth?
I still haven't decided if I like the gauges on the TLs, I am pretty fond of the design of my current TL-P, which is making it even harder to find the NAV.
While the 86 Celebrity did rule with its hole in the radiator, I was definitely partial to the velour seats in the 86 Park Avenue. Chicks really dug those.

Ok, I have read how to do the NAV -> DVD conversion. Currently I have a BS adaptor connecting my alpine satellite radio and mp3 changer. Would I need to give up one of these parts to add the DVD? Also, if I swap out the mp3 changer for an aux input for a portable mp3 player (not an IPOD), is there any way to make that display on the NAVI screen? I hope I'm asking these questions properly, but I don't have much experience with making this type of modification.
Thank you
Thank you
The DVD adapter for the factory Navi is for video input only. For audio on your DVDs you will need to use an FM modulator from the DVD player and tune the radio to 88.7 to listen. Not sure how that would work with an MP3 player
One of these http://www.crutchfield.com/S-itxi03D...099AVN5435&g=0 would work good. It has everything you want but no bluetooth.
I am not aware of anyone that sells a DVD/CD/Navi with bluetooth but Garmin is coming out with a portable navi that has built in bluetooth. That would be a suction type kind of thing not a clean install.

One of these kits from Mortola might solve your BlueTooth integration problem. I agree with the above posts, buy a used TL/TL-S with Navi... it will save you a lot of time and money.

Does anyone have experience installing either the Motorola IHF1000 or HF850? They say that they can integrate into the cars audio environment. Does that mean that I can connect them using my Blitzsafe Adaptor? Has anyone used either of these kits?
