TPMS Initiator / Receiver Unit
 

For a few weeks my TPMS sensors have been acting up. The passenger rear tire shows two dashes -- for the tire pressure. All other tires show the correct psi reading. After a few minutes of driving a "check TPMS system" message shows up on my M.I.D. After the message appears, all 4 tires show the two dashes, no psi reading.

I replaced all 4 TPMS sensors for good measure. The same issue still exists. I then swapped wheels from a working corner to the troubled corner. The problem is that single corner, not my sensors.

I have ordered a TPMS Initiator / Receiver and hope that solves the problem.

I am just looking for any second opinions? Is there anything I am missing here? Also, will the initiator be plug and play or do they require programming?

Most likely a defective Initiator. Check to make sure its not disconnected or the mounting bracket is not bent and it has a good ground. You can confirm by swapping places with another Initiator.

There's nothing wrong with the Receiver, it's picking up the other three wheels.

Check for a good ground at the #1 pin.

Sorry, I was misinformed and thought the receiver was the same as the initiator. I just ordered an initiator not a receiver.

But thank you for your help, I made sure it was connected nice and snug. I had not thought about swapping initiators, I will also check the ground.

For future reference, you could have skipped a bunch of the guess work with replacing sensors by taking it to a local tire dealer that has a TPMS scan tool. You live in Arizona where there is a Discount Tire on every other block, any of them would have scanned them for free. :2cents:

Likewise, you have the TPMS on board. To test the system all you have to do is drop the tire pressure below 24 psi at each wheel to set off the Low Tire Pressure Indicator.

The funny part is that my sensor was literally broken inside the wheel, it snapped somehow and was spinning freely inside my wheel. So a new one was still necessary, I was surprised to find out that it did not fix my issue. Is it safe to assume that it was just a coincidence?

I took my car in to Big O and they reset all my sensors. That fixed my issue. Sometimes the sensors aren't automatically picked up by the car so they have to be reset.

I did not have to replace the initiator.

New to the forum here and new to the acura world. I needed a commuter car, something better than my Ram 1500 so I bought a 2005 RL. The only issue so far is the TPMS alert keeps going off. The seller handed me a new tire sensor in the box. I took it to Discount tire and they said both fronts were bad. So I ordered another one online, and discount put them in (both fronts). The alarm went off for quite awhile and then popped back on.
Went back to discount and they checked the back sensor because it was not reading. Got it working again and I took off and today the alarm goes back off. When I check the tire pressure menu, they all have "--" next to them with no numeric value.

Could the receiver be bad? Or maybe the combo of the rear being bad as well? Any thoughts as to this?

What were the replacements? OEM? How old are they? Discount should be able to check if the sensors are sending out a signal.

They are Schrader 28981 sensors. One I got online that was new (not sure the date on it) and the other was brand new in the box that the seller provided that he said he just picked up.

What's weird is that Discount got all 4 sensors to ping and they seemed to be working just find. That's why I'm confused as to if the sensor is going and intermittently sending out a signal, or if the receiver in the RL is bad. *scratches head*

Maybe BDogg can help with this one? I think you worked at Discount Tire and were the resident tire/wheel man here for stuff like this? Calling @BDoggPrelude

Pull the codes. There is a code for every TPMS failure, even which tire is low.
