Show us your aftermarket and OEM wheels on your RL

I just bought set of 4 rims and tires that were taken off a '10 TL. It was a great price given that all are spanking new (tires still have spikes and ruffles on them). Just the tires were worth it alone; thinking that rims would be the bonus. I currently have the Bridgestone Turanza Serenitys, and can not stand them... sorry, they're not bad, but I really was hoping for less noise.

When I tried to put them on, I could not clear the *~^?!^* calipers in the front.

Any suggestions? Can I get some spacers without changing or voiding any warranties or doing harm to the car?

If not, I'll take off the tires, put them on my current rims, and sell the rims. It would break my heart, since they are brand spanking new!!! And I'll comfort myself by saying that we can not have it all, all the time.

Thank you in advance for the help!

spacers are not a bad idea if you're off by a little. If you're off by a lot...then that's no good.

VietGuy03 01-09-2011 01:47 AM

Depends on how much stud is left and how much of a spacer would be needed to clear. Pictures would probably help visualize the amount of clearance.

Chas2 01-10-2011 08:56 AM

Probably spacers and new studs. Search around here, someone did this...though not sure what they used, and I am not sure if this was the same thread that seemed to have an alarmingly low number of turns on the lug nut using the stock studs. Speaking of which, you should check the lug nut seats. I believe the 2010 TL uses the spherical (ball) seat, which was not used by the RL until 09, except on 06-08 PAX models. 2GRL from 05-08 (non PAX) used flat seat with washer.

There is a difference between spacers and spacers with studs, and depend on using the original studs for attachment. I think these might be more commonly known as adapters. Just mechanically speaking, I would go with hubcentric spacers and new lug bolts, though personally, I would never use spacers.

LEON 97RL 01-10-2011 09:19 AM

Spacers are gonna be the way to go, while your at it, push out the wheel to sit as flush as possible...

Balazs '06 RL 01-11-2011 06:09 PM

Gents,
Thank you for the recommendations! At the end, I kept it simple. I took off the new Michelin Pilot tires, and put them on the current RL wheels. I'll take the TL rims and sell them on e-bay and craigslist. It's a pity, since they're spotless... but sometimes we have to keep it simple. :-)
Thanks again!

Also, I'm not sure why people are dissatisfied with the OE Pilot on the RL. 25 days ago, I got the Bridgestone Turanza w/ Serenity tires, and I could not wait to go back to the Pilots. Here's why:
-MPG... went down to 23 from 26 on the highway
-interior noise... i had to listen to radio at 14-16 setting vs. my regular 11-12
-Pilots have less tread vibration

If you're talking about the MXM4 tires :ugh:

I never drove on Serenity's but MXM4 were the first thing I took off the last 3 cars I owned. They do not handle any sort of spirited driving, are dangerous in the rain (driving over limit) and I'm not even going to talk about snow.

This could explain why my MPG does not cross the 21 mark...

+1. I have sticky tires and my MPG is garbage at around 20.

you might want to look and post in the tires and wheels section

tnobori1 02-02-2011 03:18 PM

Don't worry, a mod can move it or close it later. Either way, it would be nice to have a thread of 18" rim options instead of having them scattered about. If there is one already, maybe a mod can merge the two or lock this one.

20's? Why not show the dubs? 23's be it, man.

Then again, the OP asked about 18's. That could be a reason.

Wow these shits is sick! I could have gotten mine with then black rims and chrome lip but was scared they wouldn't look good when the order came in. Next summer I'm almost positive I'm a go that route and get the black rims and chrome lip. That's just sexy!

That's a serious wheel! Where'd you get those, how much do they cost, etc...? I looked them up and see there's an 18, too.

Very nice look on that RL!

Great thread, today I couldn't pass up a set of 4 tires Nankang 245/45R18 Ultra sport II. I bought the set for $250, all with less than 500 miles on them. Buddy sold his BMW with snows on it and the buyer had 20's for the summer that he was going to put on, so he didn't want the tires. Now I, too, am in the market for 18" rims for my '05 RL. I know the stock offset is +55 and I've seen some guys on here go as low +42, but what is the least minimum for clearance of the front calipers...Thank you..

Sorry, if this is a thread jack..but I think it's relevant....:)

FWIW, my recently acquired 06 RL came with brand new 245/45/18 Nankang NS-II's on it. They are honestly the worst tires I've ever driven on in my life. They are 100% unstable under heavy braking or cornering. They are loud and 2 of them are out of round. Again, they are brand new tires. My original plan was to replace them right away but decided not to waste the money. I just got a set of 17" wheels/tires for winter duty and will be buying 19's next spring. It would have just been a waste of money to buy new 18" tires and only use them for a couple months at most...but the level of crap these tires are oozing almost made me do it.

23109VC 09-22-2011 10:09 PM

but for a couple of those pics... most of those RLs look absolutely pathetic with big bling bling wheels... way too ghetto for me.

I agree the OEM wheels are lame.. but for some reason, the 05-08 RL just doesn't work well with most aftermarket wheels...

sorry.. my $.02.

I somewhat agree with you. I think one of the biggest issues is the bolt pattern. Being 5-120, most decent looking aftermarket wheels were designed to suit BMW's. The Euro styling looks a bit out of place on the RL. I do think there are a lot of decent wheels out there for our cars though.
