Proper Tire Size for 19s

neuronbob says in the sticky that the proper size for 19s is 255 40 19 but tire size calculators say that our 19s should be on 245 40 19 for the most accurate speedo. Who's right? Im confused

according to the website http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

our stock being 245 50 17

with 255 40 19 our speedo will be 1.4% too slow

with 245 40 19 our speedo will be only 0.3% too slow

245/40-19 is the correct size. In 2005 and 2006 there were very few tires made in this size. The situation has improved somewhat now, as you will find. The 255 size was the acceptable close fit solution, about 1.5% off (too big).

Check with your tire retailer on the wheel width, as typically the 255 needs an 8.5 inch width, as I recall. 8.0 is fine for the 245.

Yep! 245/40-19 is the correct size, and my wheels are 19x8.5 all around. The 255 will be hard to fit an 8" rim but not the 8.5". The "look" will be slightly different but that is secondary (in my opinion) to having ABS, traction control and all those guys work properly...

Good luck,

All current RonJon wheels are compatible with the Acura TPMS sensors which are integrated into the valve stem.

1. You need to buy 4 new ones and have them properly installed in the wheels, or

2. Take them out of your OEM wheels and reinstall in the RJs.

Depending on how old your wheels are, you may be better off buying new sensors, as they do have a limited battery life, supposedly 5-7 years, and you could be approaching 4 years old on your original parts...assuming the new TPMS have not been sitting on the shelf forever

Getting a new set of TPMS, you would also have the flexibility of going back to your OEM wheels, using them for mounting winter tires, etc.

PS Which RJ are you getting? Pictures please!

The Devotion Type III wheels will require slight modification to the installation of the TPMS though.

You are absolutely correct. If sacario175 is buying Devotions, he will have to talk to his installer about the slight installation modification to the TPMS units.

I don't think I have ever seen the Devotions on an RL except Qatar's earlier Devotion 1pf wheels back in 2006??

I have them on my car (see my link). Apparently, the 3 pc wheel requires a modified installation.

You can't really say what the proper tire size is for a random set of rims..."I have...20's...what size tire do I need, or, "I have 19's/18's, etc."

I don't know how you guys are just throwing out tire sizes without knowing the specs of the rim, meaning: Length/Width. You would DEFINITELY not put 255's on a 19x7.5 rim. You would DEFINITELY not put 225's on a 19x9 rim.

Accurate rim specs from the OP are needed before knowledgeably answering the OP's question, unless he's talking about the stock OEM wheels.

^^^
The OP was talking about stock tire size 245/50-17, and asking about the equivalent tire size for 19" wheels, and why neuronbob's sticky, written in 2006, mentioned what seemed to be an "off" size.

255/40-19 is often recommended, although the correct calculated size is 245/40-19. Back in 2005 and 2006, 245/40-19 was a very rare size, more rare than 255/40-19. Now there is more choice in both 245/40-19 and 255/40-19.

I and others were talking about wheel widths, because if you do go to a 255 section, the manufacturer tire tables I looked at recommend 8.5 inches as the minimum wheel width.
