Parking brake cable is rattling...

I have been chasing down rattles in my new to me 05 RL. I replaced the front sway bar links and that fixed the front end clunking noise. Now the noise in the rear passenger side is more noticeable. It is only noticeable going over bumps with the passenger side windows down. I put the car in the air and the only thing that appears to make any noise is the parking brake cable. I just replaced the rear pads, rotors, and all the clips so I know it is not that. When I hit the cable it rattles. When I apply the parking brake it tightens up and does not rattle.

I tested driving going over bumps with the parking brake on and with it off. For only a few seconds with it on of course. With the parking brake off the rattle is there. With the parking brake on the rattle is gone!

So the noise is coming from the parking brake cable. Is there any type of an adjustment for the cable or does it need to be replaced?

fafpak > thank you thank you thank you - finally, no more clanking (like putting pots and pans away) from the rear of my 2006 rl - was driving me crazy for 2+ years and no one could figure it out - finally found a super acura dealership willing to listen to me when I told them I thought it might be the emergency brake cable - their senior tech said "that's not it!" So, I made a bet with them - they would take the car and check the emergency brake cable - if that was the issue, the work would be free, if not, then I'd pay for the hour that it took them to take a peek - guess what!?!?! you (I) were correct - so, I won the bet. But, I did pay the 1 hour fee since we all need to put food on the table and the kids through college - thanks again! back to being in love w/ my big blue bertha with the bad (_Y_) a-spec pack and awesome wheels!

I have been having a rattle off and on for a few weeks, I thought i was something within the partial shelf in the trunk. I had my wife ride in the back seat yesterday while we ran errands and we pin pointed it to the upper right corner of the trunk. After spending an hr trying to figure it out, I did this.....no more noise!!!! Thank you

Rear Passenger Suspension Rattle!!

Ahhh so annoying! I took it to a friend at Honda yesterday who is a mechanic up there. He put the car on the lift and could not find anything loose, then drove it, heard the sound and just said "It sounds tinny, not like something is broken just loose" He could never pin point it, we tried checking the parking brake cable to the back of the caliper but it was tight as could be.

Someone help because it's embarrassing when I go over bumps and rattles like it does, sounds like the car is falling apart.

Did you check the parking brake cable under the dash?

I've consolidated 4 threads into this one and changed the name in hopes of it being easier to find.

Acurazine to the rescue! I remember reading this of this ailment awhile back and my car sprung the intermittent bilateral sound. Tightened the cable and voila. Thanks 007 for consolidating all the threads into one easy to find one

I just got an 05 RL a few months back and now that warm weather is here and windows have been down, I've been hearing this dang rattling as well. Jacked the car up and a buddy and me looked over everything and couldn't figure it out. I'm leaving work and heading home to try this. I hope this fixes it. thanks for the help everyone!

I also had the rattle in the rear area, after removing the wheel and checking for anything loose, i found the dust shield had rusted through and was rubbing the rotor. removed the shield and the rattle was gone.

2005 RL 146000 miles Tightening the brake calls fixed my rattling noise over bumps. It was coming from the rear passenger side. I crawled under the car and started to tap on everything. Thank you for this thread. I was convinced it was the cv axle and Acura quoted me 1200 to fix.

Hi everyone! I hear some thumping noise from the right rear when driving on uneven, patched roads. It just sounds like an insulated thump, no rattle and no metal sound for sure. Brake job was performed a year ago on all brakes and rotors. Can anyone that hears the noise say if it was metal clank, rattle or else?

From what I remember, it was more of a metal rattle.

Anyone had seen rear upper shock mount go bad/break and know if it made a thumping noise when driving over uneven /rough surfaces? The noise sounds like coming from the trunk area, but I did check everything and all is solid there. I tested all the shocks/struts by pushing them down and they are pretty good. Just don't want to replace shock(s) if only a upper shock mount is bad.
